Annette Ribbehege said neither the Pickering-Ajax- Whitby (PAW) Animal Control Centre nor Whitby fire depart- ment would respond to calîs for help she made last wee. It was left to Ribbehege and a neighbour to rescue the cat A 32-year-ald Whitby man was 'arrested March 19 after trying to defraud the Osawa Sears store of some $8,400. Police say the Hillcourt Dr. man purchased appliances from the store and had Ithem delivered ta an address in Whitby COD. "I think this was an ugly situation," said Ribbehege. I was disgusted to t he point where I wanted to eall the hum ane society in Toronto (to complain)," she said. As Ribbehege recalled, she heard a cat "meowing" periodi- cally outside her house early last week But until last Wednesday, Rib- behege could find no trace of the cat whenever she looked in the yard. "I couldn't figure out where it was coming from," she said. "Then yesterday (Wednesday) I went outside and saw an orange cat sitting on a led ge. Ribbehege said the ledge, that measures about 18 in. long by 12 in. wide, ia situated near the top of her Georgian-style house. "The only explanation I've got is that it must have been in the trees and might have chased a squirrel," she said. "It jumped, lost its balance and gocau ht on the ledge." ¶tin that the cat would not or cou d not corne down on its own, Ribbehege contacted the animal control centre on Thick- son Road North. "I called the humane society (PAW). I was told it was a private home, theywouldn't corne out,» said Ribbèeçe. "I was told they didn t have a ladder long enough ." Ribbehege then phoned the fire department. "I talked to the chief. I was told there's nothing they can do either," she said. After explaining the situation to a neighbour, Ribbehege said the man put a ladder on t he back of his truck and climbed up to get the cat. "Halfway down the ladder the cat junwled out of his arms and took off. We haven't seen it since," she said. Ribbehege said she under- sýands the fire department not being able to help -- "'it's mot their problem» -- but feels there is no excuse for animal control. "I'm disgusted with the hum ane society, they're not doing itheir job right," she said. Although he was not familiar with this particular incident, PAW su 'ervisor Ross Baîbirnie said it dos not fali within the centre's jurisdiction. He said animal contraI officers have neither the equipment nor training to handie a situation such as the one Ribbehege described. "We deal with injured or sick animals and strays,' said Baîbir- nie. "To climb up into a high area or ledge on private property, we would refer it to a private pest contraI service," he said. Ca pt. Don Moore of the Whitby fire department said calis involv- ing animais are referred ta the aPAW off ice. 1 L y CA çir PER mou" 1 r- m
