Whitby Free Press Wedinesday. February 17, 1993, Page 21 Optimists honour sports organizations,- players The Optimist Club of Whitby held its Youth Appreciation Night on Jan. 23 at Soccer City. The theme of this year's program was ' Youth in Sports.' Six local sports organizations were represented, each of which nominated five members te receive appreciation plaques from the Optimist Club. Criteria set by the Optimist Club for nomination was not just confined te ability but aise indluded sportsmanship, enthu- siasm, effort, hard wvork and improvement. Following dinner, executive representatives from each organu- zation gave an everview of their sport in Whiitby and then introduced their nominees, giving details of each person's talents and achievements. Plaques were presented to, each boy or girl by club vice-president Jim Dimtroff, program chair Michael Airey and Optinist zone il (Durhami Region) lieutenant- governor Jim Wintonyk from the Optimiat Club of Bowmanville. Youngsters receiving the awards and executive representa- tives present were: Basebal -- (represented by Jim Andrew, vice-president): Kyle Grant, Kyle Ho fer, Philip Watson, After suffering their first ls of the season, the Pringle Creek IGA bunnies bounced back in fine fashion by capturing the Pickering tournament champion- s hip on the weekend. ?n re-tournament exhibition play the bunnies camne up on the short end of an 8-6 loss to Pickering. The bunnies leading scorer Karen McWilliaxns took the bass in the nets. Whitby's bunnies #2 met Markham in the opening game of the tournament and squeezed out an 8-6 win thanks te the fine goal tending of Elaine St. Onge. The next game pitted the Pringle Creek IGA girls against thehomne team Pickering. Whitby feil behind 6-2 early in the contest but battled back for a final 8-8 tie. Karly Simpson was solid in the nets for Wh"itby. Whitby's bunnies #12 then faced Whitby's bunnies #1 squad in the final round robin format. After two periods of close play, the Pringle Creek IGA bunnies outlasted the Whitby Home & Rural bunnies 11-4. Lindsay Giordano was credited with the win in goal. This set the stae for the rematch against the home team of Pickering. Both teams entered the final with undefeated records of twe wins and one tie. The Whitby girls showed that they were not te be denied as they opened up a 9-2 lead in the first twe periods and coasted te a 13-7 win ta capture the championshÎp. Karen McWilliams led al scorers with 21 goals. Other scorers included Kailey Mller, eight goals, an assist; Karley Simpson, five goals, four assists; Joanne Tellis, one goal, seven assists; Kelly Matthews, one goal, five assists; Lindsay Giordano, twe goals, three assista;4 Laura Grey-Ellis, seven assista; Mykala Jason Hotchkiss and Tim Imeson. Figure skating -- (Barb Ninacs, president) Natasha Brideau, Stacy Cassidy, Lindsay Moloney, Natalie Morgan and Antonella Del Sordo. Hockey -- (Stu Currie, pesident and Bob Hussey, house league director) Michael Naccarato, Chase Atkinson, Chad Kawasaki, Paul Graham and David Moolight. Lacrosse -- (Dave Edgar, president and Diane Lazory, sponsorship director) Nick Seminiuk, John Houston, Mark Çasuenette, Jonathanl Ashton Soccer -- (Neil Harte, vice-president) Camre Van Beghel, Joey James, Jefi'rey McLean, Brenna Crockford and Danny Mattin. Softball -- (John Hughes, president) Karen McWilliams, Penny Wheeler, Jillian Finley, Heather Seamone and Michelle Theriault. The event was attended by more than 70 Optimist Clu members and sports representa- tives. Foster wins competition Tiffani Foster of Whitby won top honours last weeken d at a figure skating competition held in Uxbridge. Foster pi aced first in the silver artistic category at the Pine Ride Inter Club event. he now gees on te the Eas- tern Ontario Section Inter Club Competition in Gloucester on March 6. Ail are members ef the Gemini Gymnastics Club. Whitby major peewee selects gain 2 more wins. Whitby major peewee selects returned te action last week in the North York league with twe convncing wxns. The selects sponsored by Blades Cust'im Skate Care started the week by beating Markhama 5-1. Whitby dominated the play in this game with five players scoring. Scerers were Joey Simonetta, Wayne Richard, Derek Van Egmond, Brian Crilly, and Stephen Mace. Marc Chiasson had a great game icking up three assist, while Lars Clay, Joshua Williamis each had one assist. Witby>s second game was against , Unionville Jets. The Blades continued their disciplined play and cruised te a 7-1 win. Once again Whitby's defence was spread eut with Van Egmnond, Mace, Richard, Brady Blakely, Derek Powers, Joel Gingras and Stephen Coray each scoring. Ryan Peacocke and Ryan McCarron picked up one assist each. The selects visited Bowmanville over the weekend and won a hard-feught 3-2 ganie. Whidtby jumped inte the lead early on Chad McKenzie goal only te have Bowmanville tie it up in the second period. Mace and Richard scored in the third peied and goaltender Brent Jeh ason shut the door te preserve the win. The Blades ended the week bY against the Mississauga Royals, a powerful single A team. This hard hitting game saw Whitby start slowly, relying on the sharp plaY of goaltender Jonathon Clancy te, keep them in the game. Mississauga scored two unanswered goals te win 2-0. came close te, scoring late in the ,game. Coaches Stewart Mace and Deug Peacocke are pleased with the teams progresa and strong team play exhibited by the boys this year.
