It ie only those dollars (after taxes) that you can really spend. And -... whlen it cornes to eavings and investmient dollars, they have ta grow at a rate that is at least equal te the rate of inflation plus taxes - just te break even. It really hurts. What surprises me, is people neyer think aboutit. When they see a sign. that says "Deposit with us, we'll pay you 6. per cent on our termi deposits" they think they'll have 6 per cent. No se. TheylH earn 6 per cent, but they may be losing purchasing power. If I were te earn 6 per cent in interest, and I were in the 50 per oent tax bracket, ail IM have left after passing through the "sotrainer". of taxation weuld be 3- per cent. Add te that- the "istraine r" of inflation, and if it were on]y 3 per cent, Pd only break even. With my additional 3 per cent value Id only be able te buy the same amount of goods and services as I could with the 3 per cent less last year. I've gained nothing in purch"sng power. That's why I seek investments that bear littie or ne taxation. There is nothing, or anyone else can do ta save on inflation. Some investments increase in value because of inflation. Those investments are in ownership. Investments such as a home, or farm, ownership of a business, or industry. These ü 'suLally increase in value as inflation increases. And, if they are profitable inveetments, they provide "investment return" also. Thates why I like investment funds. particularly "equity" funds which have investments in banks, utility companies and the basic backbone industries ini Canada and throughout the world. Those banks and other investments increase in value, along with inflation, and the profits I reoeive as a shareholder corne ini the formi of dividends which are taxed at a lower rate than interest. The increase in value (thanks te inflation) and expansion of the businesses gives me capital gains, of which I may earn $100,000 tax-free. .Above $100,000 in gains is still taxed at la lower rate than interest. Thus the "strainer" cf taxation is reduced considerably because of the "method' rve chosen ta, invest. Se ... because I know nothing about buying stocks, I use investment funds, which are simply a pool efnxoney managed by people who -de know how te invest and where. With one simple investment I get te participate in ownership of maybe 35'te 100 different things which are looked after fuil-time'by experts. If you'd like ta learn more about investments, taxes and complete financial management, I will be holding a free public workshop at the Whitby Civic Rec Centre (sae ad). We'1l spend a couple of heurs tagether, sorting through the confusion and hype and show you strategies you can implement right now. No speciflc products will be mentioned, just good, useful information. HELPING THE WORLD WRITE NOW CODE SeIf-sufficlehcy through lteracy ln the developlng world For Information col 1-800-661-CODE
