In piano,,she received first class honour with distinction at the Royal Conservatory of Music. For hCr ating, she was a 1990 nominee as "best up and coming actresa.» While ber mother instilled an appreciation for music, it has been Murphy's relationship with a Whitbyco le, Eric James and Phyllis OReilly,#that has helped ber talent to blossom. Career musicians, James and 0'Reilly have worked with great Eginentertainers including Charlie Chaplin, Ron Mgoody and Topol.. And with Murphy, it's p raise indeed when they say they ée what they hear. At age 12 Murphy saw an Oshawa Littie Theatre produc- tion and got hooked. Auditioning for 'Annie,' the very next play, she recýied the part of Tess. When Murhy, whose range is two and one hil octaves, began her. training with James and OTReilly, she could sing only four or five notes. "When I began I was very tense but Phyllis s3howed me breatbing exercises and presen- tation.» O'Reilly and James have pro- vided ber with invaluable exprienoe from interpretation to de ivery, and of course, an ongo- ing course in the basies. à 'l the three years she has been with us, she bas achieved an awful lot," James, says proudly. «She7s a dear girl," 0Reilly adds. "When she firat came te us she bad five little notes in hier voice. She was so very sweet. «Now she has two and a half octaves. We i.aw such potential in her."
