By Mke Kowasldk A developer's bid to change the terms of an approved subdivision agreement has been rejected by Whitby's planning and develop- ment committee. The committee recommended Monday that a rezoning applica- tion from Nor-Arm Development, Inc. for property at 720 Anderson St. be denied. If the recommondation is approved by council in two weeks, Nor-Arm will not be allowed to build anything but single-faxnily homes on the site. Such a ruling will please about a dozen residents who attended Monday's public meeting and an additional 67 who wrote letters opposing the application. Nor-àm originally submitted a proposai which called for a mixed density project on the for- mer Boychyn farm. However, this proposai was revised to include only single- family homes after area resi- dents opposed semi-detached and townhouses on the site. A plan of subdivison for 82* single-family lots was approved, by council last Ja2nuary. But George Karakokkinos 'a consultant representing I4or Armi told the comniittee the developer now wishes to modilfr the proposai. N-or-Arm would like to add 20 more units and once again make a, portion of the development semi-detached and townhouse units. Although Karakokkinos said there were several reasons for requesting the change, "commit- tee membeïars- seized on his com- ment that current econ omic con- ditions are also a factor. «This is a difficuit situation," said councillor Ross Batten, com- mittee chairman. 'This committee and council deait with the residents ini good faith, to go back on their trust would be difficult for this coun- cil," said Batten. "My personal opinion is that I don't have any sympathy for it.» Councillor Lynda Buffett said there was no need to increase the population density of the neigh- She said the developer should look at other areas of the Town which have the proper zoning if the company is intent on build- inte higher-density project. Councillor Marcel Brunelle recalled the «concern the neigh- borhood had for semi-detached and townhouses.» He disputed Karakokkinos dlaim that residents would accept this proposai. more readily that the one they fought against last year. "I don't think the neighorood is happy, they were hpier with the original an,"said Bne1e. «Financial conditions are not a good reason to make changes in th esty of a subdivision. Although billed as a public meeting, only two people spoke after Bune1le moved ,that the application be denied. Both residents supported this decision, as did their neighbors with a show of hands. 9 1 Invites You.To Celebrate New Year'sat a ---ý - j
