WHhIBgPMREEPRESSWXDNESDAY, AUGU Mo190,PAGE 15 Pool securit y systêm is a lifesaver By Trudie Zavadovlc. Drowning ranks as the third- leading cause of accidentai. deaths in Canada, ciaim ing more than 1,200 victims each year. Many of these accidents are ini the backyardfamily oo. Whitby resident Nick Corneal, a former ambulance driver, has designed a pool security system that alerts parents and neigh- bors when children inadvertenitly wander too close to the pool, or ap îracigitrudes I t took Crneai just over two hours to formulate the system, and three years to perfect it. The idea came to hlm one day when he arrived home and found his wife very upset over an epi- sode of the television program 20/20, about the number of chil- dren who die by drowning. Today.Corneal's pool security .ytmi a fuli-tuine busineiss weih operates under the namne of Life Saver Pool Guard Sys- teims Ic. Ià fe Alert is the sYStemn develo- pdyCornes], iconjunction withNVight Hawk Security. qI wanted something se kids couldgo outideand playin the a 4mer,» saysý Corneal. Hé says th t many chi1dren~ are a94ed to ren ain inside '$hen -their pakents aren't able to supervise thé pool area. Lifie Alert has its own security system which is connected to two, siren-like alarms, one ring- ing indoors, the other sounding outside for ail to hear. The outdoor alarm serves to deter persons from continuing their approach to the water's edge and to warn the owners and neighbors of the presence of an intruder, ho it a child or aduit. The indoor a]arm plugs into a normal wall socket and can ho used 24 hours; a day throughout the year. It is designed as four columne that light up around the perime- ter of the pool. It operaesfrm a low-voltage infra -red pulse beam inside the coumin. "When the kids go between the columns, the outsîde and inside sirens go off," says Cornes]. The columna are plaoed six to eight feet away from each corner of the pool, are attractive and add light for visibility at nilt. Corneal says he has hda lot Of inter.ýst from ýhe U.S. ýfor bis WoductI andhle sbeginpi*ng to nà arket it in Canada and the lIn Ca ada it sells for$1,599 (installef), which Cornes] con- siders <inimal to proteet your children " He is now looking for Canadis4n distributors. "I only designed it to1 protect the kidâ 'not to make ýa wild fortune.lihe price is where it bas to be.M Corneal, says the system can ais e ho used around nursiLng homes an~d health institutions to keep residents from wanderng away. He also suggests it's go ffor cottgeareas to keep kids from wadring down to the docks. «We've really geared ourselves to the safety part and designed it to how I would like te buy semething from someone.» Cornal and bis wife have three children. The system i. not intended te replace parental su- pervision of children, but rather ýo aid parents i preventing potential tragedy. -THE KJD'S parade through Whitby's downtown wiil kick off the DBJA chldren's festival on- Saturday.
