They are part of the Environ- mental Youth Corps a summer intaiebetween tue Town of Whitby and the Ministry of the Enviromnent.* According to Mike McTavish, technical advisor for the corps, there are 25 open spacesail over Whitby that have been laden with anything from popcn n domestic garbage, to heavy-duty garbage like beds, couches, applhances, car parts, and «every- tmg inbetween. "Most open spýaoes fail victim to this," says McTavish. "Hope- fully w;e can clean them up and keejp them clean.» He says that, on average, two to three truckloads of garbage are removed each day. Unfor-- ttanately, they do not stay dlean as many of t he areas have been replenish ed with new garbage. "The open spaoes are mainly the hazard lands that can't be developed.
