WII1TBYRE PIRS% WEDNESDAY. AUGUOË 1, 1M9, PAGE 17 Crouch aims. for. top 5 finish in worlds. By Chyle Bovie Coming off an impressive gl medal performance athCana- dian roller skating champion- ships, Jamie Crouch of Whitby and dance partner Heather Paterson look poised for a top five finish in the world cham- pionships in October. *We skated fabulous, we won unanimously. Itfs been a great' year,» said an- ecstatic Crouch, Who won hie fifth Canadian titie. The dance duo had previously captured gold at the Mexican Olympic Sports Festival. They are now training for the world championships to be* held in Frankfurt, West Germany. Crouch and Patterson are cur- retrranked seventh in the woltheir highest- standing since they began skati.ng together four years ago. Part of their success can be attributed to the coachin of Marijane Stong, who traineil ice dance champ>ions Rob MeCal and Tracy Wilson. More and more rouler skaters use the choreographic services of ice coaches, and roller coaches can either watch and' learn or snub the latest trends. While roller dance is big in Europe, it finds atough market in Canada. «When I was i Europe last fail the championships were broadcast' on TV ail over.» Crouch says. "It doesn't bother me. I enjoy doinçq it and we love to do what we do. In the 1992 Olympie roller hocke will be an ex1Éibition sport. Yet it appears that. the earliest rouler skating dance could become a medal sport is the year 2000. Crouch began ice skating through- hockey. Shortly after trying on roller skates, h e took lessons in the sport and bis talent became reahized. Although the worlds will show- case- their talent, Crouch says tradiltion and, expérience are fac- tors in j*udging.. «It's very political.
