PAGE 14, WITBY FREE PRESS WEDNESAY, JULY 2r4 1990 by JiI Mclntosh Onie of the, best Canats, the l9th annual Canadian Street Rod Nationals held here in Whitby on Jly 6, 7 and 8, is a memory now -- and according te moat of the participantsi, a happy one. 7Many of the people I spoke te over the weekend teld me it was one of the best shows they had ever attended. Many also said that the great welcome given te them by the town of WVhitby made the weekend special. The tours te Whitby interest spots such as Cullen Gardens, Faniily Kartways and the downtown sidewa]k sale were busy ail weekend. Two women from Massachusetts teld me over and over how much they liked it here -- they had visited the sidewalk sale twice and were on their way te =the Whitby Mail. (Their husbands weren't quite as enthusiastic considering how many packages they brought back!) Approximnately 14,000 specta- ters entered over Saturday and Sunday te view the 490 cars on display. The bookkeeping is not flnished so the axnount that will be given te the Whitby General Hospital fund is not yet known but it will be announced soon and it is expected te be generous. Many events helped te make the weekend special but a few stand out in mny mind. One was the chance te, catch up with an old and very dear friend -- one F neyer met before! Although Id been a pen-pal with my friend jiz Kitzul from Winnipeg for some time, it was the first time we'd met. She drove her open 1923 Ford T-bucket to the event, and received the Mayor's Choice Award and a gift from deputy mayor Tom Edwards when he decided that her car was lus. favorite in the show.1 A popiflar gaine at the show was the ski race: four people strap on twvo long sis and walk in umisoni over a racecourse. It requires teamwork, and the tearà that won cýrt.aînly displayed that. Yet one o the members, a car owner fom Quebec, spoke virtually no English at aIl. The other three needed a fourth player so they added hMm on te their teain. Togethier, ail four figured out what they needed te, make it work even though they couldn't ta]k te each other. Such is the power of friendship and a common goal. And one lady, - Bey Ottaway from Brechin, overheard someone talIng about a car that was there. The owner's naine sounded faiiar, so we looked it up. Sure enough, it was Bev's maid of honor at her wedding, a women she hadn't seen for 19 years. Afler sending out several people in search of the missing bridesmaid, we finally got the two' reunited. Ail weekend they wa]ked around the park armn-in-arm, chatting away trying to catch up on nearly two decades. Most members are from the United States, and many drove their classic cars rather than tow them.
