'Lost By JII Mlnth 'Lost ln A Memory' is the slogan painted on the back of Bruce and Lynn Johnston's 1955 Ford Crown Victoria. A lot of people think its jus t a cute saying, but it goes much further than that. "Twenty-four years ago, when we got marnied, we had one of these,m Lynn explains "Bruce would pickme up in it to go on dates. That's the memory we mean.0 Bruce, now 43 and a corporate director foi the Canada Transport Group, had been a member of the Kustom Kings car club back then in Oshawa. In the hot-rodding style of the day, Bruce's Ford was lowerecl three. inches, with Frenched antemnaes, "bluedotse in the taillights ta, make them look pink, and other mild custom tricks. The new Ford has ail the modifications of its predecessor. nAfter we got married, we wantAd a house, and the car had to go,e Lynn says. nBut we 'n emno always talked about owning another one.0 "We talked about it over and over,m Bruce agrees. nWhen the kids were grown, we decided to look for one., Their search was a long one but they finally found this Ford five years ago in PefferIawv. It was ail original and Bruce did the work himself to turn it into the car ho had owned. They now drive the car regulaîly on goods days ta such events as cruise nights and car shows. Last year they drove it to New Jersey for the Leadsled Nationals, an annual event for ukustomnizedn cars similar ta CANATS. mWe have fun doing the whole '5Os thing,w Bruce says. aWe go ta '50s dances and wear the costumes, and we enter the dance contests. We won the jive contest at the insmen dance not long ago.0 At first their two boys were skeptical. wWhen 1 first brought the car home, they wanted ta know why 1 even bought it,u Bruce says. wNow that it's ail fixed up, the only thing they say is don't ever seli it, don't sel iti Our son is getting married in six weeks and ho wants al aId cars at the wedding. They've really become. interested in them since we got the Ford.w Lynn explains that the car is a faîthful reproduction of their first one, right down ta the small blue lights in the corners af the windshield. These are known among car bufis as fsex lights.n "My mother used ta warn me about Bruce," she laughs. *She'd say, 'I don't know about that boy with the Nlue lights in his carl That boy's here ta pick yau up, and he's goï: those blue lights in his cari' Oh, when she found out that we were going ta get married, you should have heard her thenr But twenty-four years later, Bruce and Lynn Johnston are still happily *Lost In A Momory,w blue lights and ail.
