WHMTY FREPRESS9 WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6,1990, PAGE 21 ei If you like camping, there is no need to try and convince you that it is a most enjoyable way of spending your vacation. On the other hand, if you have neyer tried capng or even given. it a thought, you may b e missing out on a lot. Camping is more than just moving around the country and sleeping in1 a tent; it is of course, essential that you like travelling, for if you would rather sit in front of your television set, hardly moving except during commercials, chances are that the life of a camper is not for you. Camping is not an expensive sport and it 'is possibly the best way to travel around discovering the countryside. There is a certain adventurous way of thinking that goes with the love of camping. It seeme that Camjige thenatural thing too. Jua look at children playingby themselves, in the yado even in the house: they like to build a 'biouse" or a "tent" with a iece of cardboard or an oldtablecloth. They pretend tliey are out in the far western plains- playing Cowboys and Indians, or whatever. Imagination is one powerful reasn why children have such a good time; they seldom get bored because they are always busy pretending to *be somewhere or someone else. Children especialy enjoy going camping as it is a great outdoor adventure. This is one Urne- when the et te touch everything and ear about nature. They neyer have te be told "don't touch this" or "don't get your hands dirty" and se many other bits of advice that continuously fail on their ears at home. Out in the country,1 youngsters can have a1 wonderfu time because they j are free te roam, and te learn about thinge, they would never see back in the olc neighborhood. For children, sunimer vacations become twice as interesting and fun if they' include one or more* camping trips. They know they wil] have a wonderfu.l Urne and they will be fiving im the country, just like the heroes they read and dream about. There are as many types of camping, as there are campera. A bachelor who likes fishing or hunting wilI organIze his camping trip in a very different way than the couple who must think of the children. Parents who brmng their children on a campmg trip must be patient, and above ail, they must ogns their vacation se asteep the kide occupied. r I An inexpensive way of vacationing Anyone who thinksaa camping tnsjeexpensive je as fa rom the truth as one can be; camping ie by far 'the easiest and cheapest way of vacationing. Unless you want to. buy more camping equipen than you actually need or invest in an expensive motor home, camp i evey affordable. A tn, h simplest type you can find, on your backanda agood pair of shoes are ail you really need to get away. In the case of family camping, it is perhaps better to have two tenta, one for the parents, and one for the children. This ie more practical and the children will enjoy themselves a great deal more because they will have their own tent, but will still feel secure knowing that you are stili right next to them in case of emergency. When you decide on a camping trip for your vacation, you must settle the question of setting up a tent or of driving a'trailer. If you are setting up a tent deep in the woods, do remember te brn gq enough food. If you decide te drive a trailer, there is enough space available te transport as much food as you like. * Depending on the expenience of the campera, the *food preparation shiould be 1left te semeone, with enough experience. There is no need te, eat sandwiches throughout the stay. A camping trip is not a picnic where you only bring enough food for one. or two meals, for only a few people. Before leaving on a camping trip, make sure you have . the necessa"~ eqipent. However, don t try te bring your complete home hi the -country, You don't need' everything you have in the kitehen. The average camper will flnd out that he hardly ever uses haif the equipment he brings out with hlm on his first camping trip. This is even more important if you are carrying ail your equipment in your pack sack. Again, you don't want te bning- everythi»ng but the kcitchen sink when leaving for a few days. If you bring your family,- remember that children can easily wander and get bast; let them roam around, certainly, but make sur you know where they are at al Urnes. It je important, during *the firet few camping trips, or while children are stil very young, not te, venture out teo far inte the woods. Emergencies can arise, and travelling several mile at night through an unfamiliar region te get te a doctor or a hospital can be a very nevg misadventure. unevg o..
