Dog races newest event ait fair *By Trudie Zavadovicu The Brooklin Sping Fair will hold a dog race competition for the firet time this year. Rose Reid, of. the famiiy-operated Reideli Farmes in Ashburn, in co-ordinating te even. She says they hold annual dog trials on their farmi. The breed of doge are 'Jack Russell Terriers (the .kind of do g eatured ini the mnovie 'Honey I Shrunk the Kids'). Ros ays that at the (JNE, contestants must race their terriers in formai attire. These dog races will flot be as formai, but they will be fun, she promises. The track at the fair is .150 feet long. Six dogs race at a tinte. "Depending on the amount of entries, we run heats," says Rose. Winners of each heat wiil then mun against each other in the final race. Because dogs are not livestock animais, Rose says she won't know for sure how many doge are entered until the competition. »They don't (necessarily) preenter." Specifications are that doge have te be terriers that measure 15 inches or under at the shoulder (ground te shouider>. They can be mixed terriers te run in the terrier races.' There will be Jack Russell Terrier races and ail-breed races. The finale wiii be a 'Battie -of the Breeds' race in which' the winners of competitions -race aist each o ther te determine a winner. Rose says that Jack Russell terriers have been very popular for the past 20 years. She exet the races te be loud, noisy and very exciting. "Ail aduit terriers must wear a muzzle when chasing the lure,' says Rose. «They ail want te own it. At the end are bales of' hay and a waii with a 10- te 12-inch hole in it. The lure goes through the hole and the dog that retrieves it is declared the winner. Ribbons are presented te first- te fourth-place finishers and rosettes go the wimxers.
