Obviously, the message dldn't get across. There were a number cf co ncemns mentloned by area residents whon the Nor-Arm Developments Inc. subdivi- sion plan for the west side of, Anderson St., north of Bradley Dr., was outllned last' October at a public meeting. Parking, fenclng, acces and property upkeep weme concerns that would be answered, residents were told by the developer, who wanted no further delay n Town approval of the subdivision. The plan was revlsed and a recommendation was made followlng that public meet- C ut i10t out lng. Another of the apparent "promises" was Un response to a wlsh by Town councillors that the trees on site be preserved. They weren't. Councillor Marcel Brunelle states that the property which -was once home to "very old and beautiful trees", Is now a 11moonsca e." How could It nappe hy ddHi happen? Was the developer negligent? 18 ho to blame when the trees mhay flot have been part of the reviseçi subdivision plan, and weme work crews Ignorant of such a condition? And what about the appare nt Ignorance of the Town ln monitoring the site, NIf ndeed the Town dld monitor the development.? Perhaps its time, as councillor Brunelle suggests, for those guaranteos, lncludlng funds ln tn>st, that natural, habitat won't be dlsturbed durlng development. t should be plainly stated ln subdivision -agreements - before more "moonscapes" appear wheme they shouldn't. ReI.versai of decision was 'preposterous' To the editor. It was more than a littie disconcerting reading your March 28/90 article about Whitby council having to reverse its previous rejection. of an application proposai, for an addition te a convemience store. Just who are the vill Ins?1 To the. editar: I amrnrting about commenta that have been made recently by Town counclilors about signs that are making our tewn look like a circus. jJust who are the vilains? One would ask why the town is allowing more gas stations, plaza stripe, fast food stands, etc., etc., to locate in town when already ws have too many- for present merchants te struggle and compote with? Our downtewn merchants are having a teugh time afttrcting shoppers, copeting with outaide strip plazas and ail their placard are the new housing developments ailowed te blave their igns out on street corners dayin and day eut?, It seme the wrong spe have been singled out. St sales people I know only leave their ein out for short times and gher them Up quicly at the end of the day. Yours truly, Goeiry Emm Whitly PS.- Letes not forget the last élection and ail the signe. GST deeisioex will be remembered To the edfitur COW.?y et the letter to Ontarkc riding MP Roue Sotens Re: The GST tax David Kilgour, -Conservative NP' for Edmonton South, and Alex Kindy, Consorvative Ml' for Calgary Northeast, have had the guts te, stand up and ho counted in opposition te the GST tai and in support of your wishes of their constituents. You have indicated te, your constituency that you wilI support the implementation of this tai regardiess of the fact that the mgjority of people living in Pickering, Ajax and Whitby (Ontario riding) are opposed. A change is takcing place in the political spectrum of this country and your decisfion in this matter will ho remembered. Your vote for the GST will not ho considered an heroic stance in the face of stiff opposition but a slap in the face te the people who voted for you. Ail of the justification in the world cannot excuse the excesses of this government and supplying them with additional funds te squander in a like manner is an outrage te the people of Canada. David Barber Whithy I had the notion that official Town plans, officiai zoning and bylaws were laid out txa give long range directives te mayors and councillors who corne and go, e they would not bo guided by their own particular leanings. As for the decision that was revsrsed on the application: 1. the property i question i. zoned commercial; 2. Town council rejected the applicant's proposai; 3. 'theý applicant wantsd the. caserfreg e the courts; 4. two law firms were consulted, needflessly and at taxpayers' expnse, te, inform Witby councTI hat they had no authority to deny the application. "But two legal opinions say that we are ovsrstepping our bounds"» said Mr. Batten. "As much as I bats it, I have to, comply with the law," said another councillor. How utterly preoSterous! Did not the mayor or any of the councillors know what the'zoing was or bother ta check it out beforehand? In another case, a while ago, an applicant 'on north Brock St. compieted .an 'application consistent with the« zoningi, but was turned down. Ho appealed te the 0MB who upheid him and Whitby council had te back down. Are these instances indicative of the calibre of the performnance of, Mayor Bob A tteslsy, M'.- Batten and the counclors who are conducting the business on behaif of thetxaesof WhiMtby?
