FEBRUARY1419 I was first given a tour of this town in 1968. 1 waE visiting Herb and Audrey Dennis who had move4jfrori Toronto, Herb was a foreman'at Dunlop in T onb and was transferred to the new plant in Whitb.1 loved Whitby 80 much I sold niy home in Toronto and bought a house in Whitby in 1969. I asked Dr. Jaciw, who was my doctor, "How willI get to know the people in this town?" He said, join ai' the clubs, Dorothy. The first thing I did *as to become a member of Ail Saints Anglican Church. I love the church and our beautiful choir. I worked on the campaign to raise money for the new addition. Next Ijoined the Legion Branch 112 Whitby ladies' auxiliary, raised money for the poppy fund (and stili do) and sold bats at the County Town Parade every July: straw hats, farmer's hats, firemen hats for convention parades in Whitby and Brooklin, and top bats. I laterjoined the branch as an associate member and sold raflie tickets on cars, televisions, radios and sides- of beef.1 Next I joîned our historical society arid sold tickets for antique clocks and our fir4t Doi'u ever historical calendars. hr Next was the Whitby Station Arhet Gallery, 1 helped them raise money by froM selling raflie tickets on Eskimo art and mn other items.me I then joined the Good Comparions at Of w Fairview Lodge, sang in their choir and sold ralie tickets every year at their She% bazaar. I joined the Whitby Seniors- rb AciiyCntre when it first openedard, for years sat at a table and sold raffle adopi tickets for beautiful donated art and crafti un made by our seniors for *our yearly bazaar. mn I raised the most money on my own for the Valez J. O. Ruddy Hospital, now Whitby General. Dy One summer I. sat at a card table Dy outside the Royal Bank and took hurdreds of names on a petition (nine sheets) te keep our comnxunity a town, at the same time selling tickets for dlocks, Eskimo art and xnarigold pins made by another senior, Barbara Drinkwalter. I also acted as an information centre, as we had not yet built one. I was one of three persons chosen for ,A 15-year gold pin, presented by the Miistdr of Culture at Queen's Park, Toronto, for my volunteer work. It was a wonderful honor and surprise. I ezijoyed every minute of my work; it was a pleasure and stili is te raise money for suoh worh causes. I also seII daffodils two days each year for th Cancer Society. I got Up very early in the morning to greet Terr> Fox and shook bis hand giving him a smgll prayeil "%7aatloa -Lxm, Ls book and a cheque. We have so many taiented people in this wonderful Town of Whitby. We have our own seniors' choir that has won many awards and they are always in demand. Aise the County Town Singera who have won acclaim wherever they sing, Austria, U.S.A. and many parts of Canada. This year, 1990, is also our 22nd year of twinning with Longueuil, Quebec. This is the -only holiday I ever have had. I have -met some. wonderful, loving, caring people. I have oiy missed it twice in 22 years because of iîness. I would like te thank Mayor Bob Attersley for putting the Town of Whitby on the map. Thank you te ail council members, Bill Wallace, administrator (Peter Perry of 1989), afl departments of the Town, our police and fire departinents who kepthis town in tip-top shape, and last, but not least, Verna Roberts, executive assistant te, the mayor and coûnci1 - a wonderful lady. Len Cullen, who knew what he was doing when 'eý hechose Whitby for bis Gardens' and Miniature Village. Resteration of Lynde House, Garden Gate Restaurant and more te come. I have met a lot of generous people in my fund-raising efforts and made a lot of friends. When I was in the hospital and could not do the poppy fund that year, the merchants got a lovely get weil card and ail signed it. I cried for happiniess not pain te think they ail thought enough -abut me té be concerned. I aise like te act as an ambassador of-goodwill for Whitby. I have made a lot of friends that way. They appreciate me telling them ail the fine things te, see and do here in the town. To my Valentine Whitlby (a littie bit ofRHeaven) and al the kind people I met here: it has been the best 20Oyears of my life. I thank the Lord every day, that he planted me here in Whitby.
