E Roosarnd Carver dlisplays work at Whitby library.* By Nicole Lylyk During February, t he Whitby Public Library is hosting Paul Ward and his entourage of hand- carved wood sculptures. A resident af 1Whitby, Ward toak up wood carving fjuet over twa ears ago when he injured hie eack, preventing him from remainingemplayed. Afté/ visiting a local woadcarv- ing show, hie interest was piqued and he has been creating hie own carvinge ever since. There is oertainly no shartage of public intereet: during hie short career as a carver thus far, photogr aphers from varjous mediahlave visited te capture the wonder of sonie of hie recent accomplishments, including a dieplay at a craft show last year at f eber Down. Conservation Area. Woodcarving at thie time, however, je not a dependable source of incarne, particularly when the cast of materials je ca .nsidered..According te Ward, he earns approimately $2 per hour for each model. Dependin<g on the amount of work invalvea a madel may take anywhere froni 30 ta, 60 haure te carve. But Ward stresses that he does not mind the work since hie finds it .ighly enjoyable and it "pré- vents the boredom.» Due te the difflculty in locating the required toals te niake hie models, Ward je now mailing letters te numnerous wood supply shape in the U.S. and in Canada in an attempt ta hopefully ineti- gate ani affiliation agreement or a self-sufficient operation ta help relieve the problem. With the intention cf keepi"ng this newly found intereet alive, Ward has begun ta explore com- mission wark as well: there lie a model cf a life-size Canada Goose in flight suspended in the foyer of the Gare1 Mutual Building in Camnbridge, Ont. Other creations have been eold at various craft and carving 1phows. The Wardl exhibition continues at the l1ibrary until Feb. 28.
