Volunteers distribute information about the prora to schools. Block Parents, a Canada-wide organization, is designed to in- crease child awareness and pro- moto safety.. . Prospective Block Parents must be screened by the police. Even if only one peson in a family wants to' be a Block Parent, ail the members, over age 16, of that individual's home' must be screened. Block parent signs are -only given ta an indivi- dual when he or she reaches age 18. With an information sheet attached to the back of a card, Block Parents are informed of procedures to follow as weII as when to have their sign dis- played.' Kim Torok of Whitby and the other 34 participants will be heading for South Ainerica with the Youth Challepge Inter- national group in August. She is currently a student at Waterloo University, enrolled in the kinesiology program. Before being chosen for the mission, the participants had te complete a 'two-daLy endurance test conducted at the army base in. .Borden. The test was used te monitor the group's response te adverse conditions which they will encounter in some locations during the tnp. The purpose of this trip is mainly medial assistance for the countr»y. The students will assist in providing sight-restori*ng cataract surgery; mobile medical units, which will -b. going te the- remoe rainforest regions of the country; community service pro- jects which will involve restering schools and community centres; and there will also be a hydro power research study conducted.
