PAG 1, HrIBYFRE PRESS, WEDNESDAY JANUARY 24,1990 ALBERT (ALLIE) WALIoR The oldest resident of Whitby who was born in the County Town, Albert Alexander (Allie) Walker, died at Farview Lodge, Whitby, on Sunday, Jan. 14, 1990, at the age of 102. A resident of Fairview Lodge since 1983, he formerly lived at 820 Dundas St. W., Whitby, al his lîfe. A son of the late Alexander Walker and Sarah Jane Murray, he was born in a house at the corner of Raglan and Dundas Streets, Whitby, on June 18, 1887. Known in the community as "Honey Bee Walker," Mr. Walker Obituaries raised bees and sold lhoney from the tîme of the First World War until be retired at the age of 95. With as many as 300 bives, located at Whitby, Dagmnar, Myrtle and the Rouge River, he won many prizes for bis boney at the Royal Winter Fair, the Canadien National Exhibition and other fairs. His honey was shipped to many points in Canada, the United States and England, and at one time, he taught bee keeping at the Ontario Ladies' College (now Trafalgar Castle School). In 1947, Mr. Walker sent a case of 24 tins of bis best boney to England as a wedding present for Princess Elizabeth, -now Queen Elizabeth II. For many years he was the proud possessor of a letter of thanks for this gift, from Bucingham Palac e. In 1975- he donated to the Whitby Public Library the original silver trowel used to lay corner stone for the Carnegie Library at Dundas and Byron j-: Streets, on June 9,:1913. At the ae of 87, be made a wooden case for the, trowel, which is on display in the public library, adjacent to the Peter Perry Room. In .1986, the 1ongtime member of St. Adrew'sg Presbyterian Church doneted a memorial window to, the church, in memory of himself and bis wife. He was a past vice-president of the Canaclian Bar Association and past president of the Lawyers' Club of Toronto, the County of York Law Association,' the Toronto St. Andrew's Society and the Toronto Hunt Club. Hie was also a bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada. On June 2, 1934, Judge McGillivray was married, in Toronto to the former Sheila Playfair Lee, who survives him. He is survived by one nephew, Jack W. Read and bis wife Lily, Lof Bobcaygeon. 1 One brother, William Walker and one sister, Mrs. William J. F. Read (Florence), died before him. Mr. Walker was at the W. C. Town Funeral Chapel, Whitby, where Rev. W. J. S. McClure conducted the funeral service on Jan. 17, 1990,* to be followed later by interinent in Groveside cemetery, Whitby. If desired, contributions to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.' 1 GEORGE ARGO McGTLLIVRAY A former judge of the appeal court of the Supreme Court of Ontario, Geforge Argo McGillivray, died at Toronto, on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 1990. Hie had been a resident of Toronto for more than 55 years. A son of the late Dr. Charles F. McGillivray and Caroline Argo, he was born at Whitby on Sept. 9, 1900 and attended public and high school in Whitby. Judge McGillivray enlisted in the ll6th Battalion in'the First World War at the age of 16 and. served with the Canadian Arrny and the Royal Air Force in France. He also served in the Canadian Army in the Second World War. Between the wars, he was commanding' officer of 'C Company of the Ontario Regiment at Whitby, with the rank of major. Judge McGillivray graduated from the University.of Toronto with a B.A. degree in 1927 and was a law student at Osgoode Hall, Toronto. lie was called to the bar of' Ontario in 1930 and was a partner -of - McLeod ânà jd McGillivray from 1930 to 1934. In 1933-34 he was-an assistant master at Osgoode Hall, and was, created a King's Counsel in 1945.
