Durham regional council passed the motion last Wednes- day as a response to Bill 187 which shifts the responsibility of court security from the Province to the municipalities. The change met with strong opposition from police forces, commissions and- councils, including Durham Xitby Mayor Bob Attersley, head of the police commission, told coundil that the extra offi- cers were necessary to ensure the security of the judges, of the court premises, of the people in custody and of persons who take part in court proceedings., "At present time we have 12 unarmed people who are used to escort prisoners, " said Attersley.
