WHffTBY MRE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8,1989. PAGE il Oppostion to planned apartment expansion By Trudie Zavadovies There was mass opposition at Monday night's Town planning meeting to a itezoning application to build an addition on to the existing apartment building at 300 High St., Whitby. Wayne 'Balahood, landiord of the existing 24-unit apartment building, has made application to build a 15-unit extension to the building and has complied with al Town requirements. Resi- dents, however, are totally opposed t o the move. Helen Ferry, on behaif of resi- dents, submnitted a petition with '58 names opposing the expan- sion. Residents say the increased density is not appropriate in the existing single- family neigbor- hood, would result in the deva- luation of nearby properties, in- crease noise, create parking pro-' blems and open the possibility for future high rise development. Ferry then asked Balahood if profit was the main reason for the application to change the *"Myng motive has no bearing on the application," replied Bala- hood. A Ferguson Ave. resident then asked Balahood what benefits would result from the modifica- tions of the building. "I can't think of any benefits of value to the surrounding area," replied Balahood. Ferry said that the building had been a problem "from day one" and that residents were tired of the issue. Balahood said if that was the case, then zoning changes should have been made when the officiai plan wýas revised. John Adamson, a tenant in Balahood's building said, "Bala- hood lis determined to get as much bucks out of this (the building) that he possibly can." He said that the 15 per cent rent increase Balahood submitted last winter was turned down. "He lost' resoundingly - ail he got was the standard increase." Planning department will obtain further comments before. recommending on the applica- tion. It is expected to take about two months.
