OPEN: MON. - FR1. 8-5 Over the past several years. millions of Americans have learned how easy it is to insulate their attics and help save on home cooling and heating costs. Many of these individuals. flot wanting to stop here, however. are inter- ested in learning where else in their home they can insulate by themselves. In response to this question. experts at the Certainleed Home In stitute suggest crawl spaces. There are two general methods for insulating crawl spaces and picking the correct one depends largely on the type of crawl space you- have in your home. Both can be insulated in several easy steps. And faîl. with its cool and com- fortable temperatures. is the perfect time for this home improvement project. If the crawl space contains he.-r- ing and cooling equipment. ducts or water pipes and is well enclosed. the Home Institute rec- ommends insulating the crawl space walls. This helps create a comfortable area under the living quarters and helps protect equip- ment and pipes from damage caused by cold and heat. If the crawl space is open to the weather. or if there is no reason to heat the crawl space. the experts recommend insulating the sub- floor overhead. This helps keep the floor in.'the living quarters above warm ini the winter and cool in the summer and makes them more comiortable. To insulate crawl space walls. you*ll need work gloves. a ham- mer and nails. several precut pieces of lxs and 2x4s. a heavy duty staple gun. a utility or serrat- ed knife and roils of kraft-faced fiber glass insulation. Start by cut- ting pieces of insulation long enough 10 cover the wall and overlap the floor by 2 feet. Fasten to the subfloor with 1x2*s. Cover the entire wall, laying each piece of insulation firmly ne;t to the one before it. with the kraft-facing toward the open area. Then place 2x4's along the insulation at the base of the floor to hold it in place. To insulate crawl space sub- floors overhead, you*Il need work gloves. protective glasses and dust mask, fiber glass batts or rolîs. chicken wire und a heavy duty sta- pie gun. or ligh t gauge wire and a hammer and nails. Start by placing the insulation., with kraft-facing up. îightly against the subflooring from below. Hold the insulation in place with chicken wire and staple the chicken wire to the bottomn of the floor joists. Another meéthod for holding the insulation in pla ce is to, criss-cross wire back and forth around nails in the bottom of the joists. By installing recommended amounts of insulation in your home's crawl spaces. usually.R-19, vou'll be helping to cut back on your homnes heating and cooljng costs. saving valuable energy dol- lars and making your home more, comfortable year round.
