By night, he practises his role as Dr. Hornby in the Harold Pinterplay' Kind of Alaska?' DiMond who will also appear in another of the three Pinter plays to be presented by the D urharn Shoestring Performers Oct. 27-28 and Nov. 3-4, is delighted to have landed the parts. "This is really my first major introduction to Pinter," says Dia- rnond. "I don't know that I've ever _gone to a live performance (of a Pinter play). P"Impressions have been that Pnter is the playwright of the unresolved," says Dianond. "Puzzlernent and bewilderment are initial reactions. That is the strength of Pinter as a play- wright. There are as many inter- pretations as there are members of the audience. "In that sense," says Diamond, "the greater challenge is not in the actor but in the audience. The actor must elect one inter- In the first play 'Nightschool,' Diamond plays Mr. Salter, whose origins are vague. Mr. Salkter has lived rnost of his adult life in London, England although he has been a merchant seaman. "Salter has lived by his wits, says Diamond. "He has a check- ered career and is involved in illegal activities. He knows his way around and definitely knows the London underworld. "He is what's known as a 'wideboy', says Diamond. "Someone who knows aIl the an&gles, who is on the lookout to max ehe most of any situation. By ail accounts, he has been successful at that." In 'A Kind of Alaska,'Diamond plays Dr. Hornby, who becomes totally preoccupied with the reco- very of his patient who has been in a catatonic state for 'some years. "Pinter has smudged the medi- cal categories," says* Diarnond. "The smu dging hie does is of the state called catatonia, a resuit of a functional mental disorder. It is a nowhere, absent indif- ference, a flight from anxiety.
