"We faced a physically larger team," said Duignan. Redmen lost the series four games to two. Redmen won the fifth game of the series 12-8,and lost t he sixth game 10-4. "New West had the will to win and their teamn was buiît specifi- cally to play us. They deserved the win," said Duignan, noting that Redmen had a number of injuries. Among the inj*ured were Terry Bullen, PaulS t. John, Blane Harrison Rob Hanna and Kevin Van Sickfe. Redmen also lost the services of Kevin Antrim due. te work commitinents. Antrim also broke his nose during the series. "The injuries are nlot an excuse but it did create a lack of depth on our bench," said Duignan. In the sixth. and final game, Redmen again displayecf the' major shortcoming that perhaps cost them a third straight Mann Cup - poor third periodplay. A big reason for that weakness was the goaltending of Shawn Quinlan and the intense check- ing of the Salmonbellies. Gary Gait was enveloped, often wallo- ped by Salmonbellies every time he Ladthe bail and even when he. didn't - yet he still managed to break free and score te keep Redmen . alive, .while .'drawingrý numerous penaâlties. Gait scored five goals in the fifth gaine as Redmen won 12-8. His fifth goal, a shorthanded effort. was the only goal for Redmen in the third period. Redmen failed -to score in the third period of the s'ixth game - and failed to follow up on superb goaltendin by Wayne Colley who held Redmep in the gaine until the late stages of the third. SSalmonbellies broke open a close contest with five unans- wered goals in the third, the last two into an empty net, to win 10-4. Paul Jones scored twice to give Salmonbellies the early lead in the first period before Gait replied for Redmen. Then the benches emptied with about six minutes remaining in the first. Scott McMichael and Greg Lepine of Redmen, Eric Cowie- son and Mike Kettie of New West were ejected as was Steve Manning, a New West coach, after he tried to break Derek Keenan's stick during the fracas. When play resumed Andy Ogilvie made it 3-1 and then Keenan made it 3-2 before the period ended. Colley and Quinlan were out- standing in the second period as the teains each managed te store only twice. »en Hieltjes, the tal forward whô led the New West attack throughout the series, made it 4-2 and then former Redmen Doug Deschner made it 5-2. Kevin and Greg VanSickle scored two quick goals to keep Redmen close at 5-4 before the second period ended. Jones, with bis third, Hieltes 39yer-ldDave Durante and Geordie Dean, with the two in the' empty net, scored in the. third. Redmen were unable to mount a consistent offenoe in the face of strong team defensive play by Salmonbellies. REDMEN played well for the first- two against the strong New.
