PAGE 23 ,Acura Tnt egra - igger admorepwru In March of 1987, Honda took a bold step by setting up a separate car division in Canada to seIl their new lime of performance and luxury cars. Acura was an unfanilliar name te the Canadian buying public, and many people todà y still think an Acura is some kind of expensive Swiss watch. Honda makes few mistakes though, and ,sales of Acura~s two models, the Integra and Legend, have totalled 16,000 so far, or one per cent of the- total Canadian market. That's a higher sales pergentage than BMW, Mercedes Benz, Volvo, Audi, Saab or Jaguar. The fact that Toyota and Nissan have established their own upscale divisions, Lexus and Inllniti, tends to confirm the wisdom of Honda's move. 1 Acura started out with 27 Canadian dealerships which bas since risen te 37. The Legend accounts for 4.4 per cent of the Canadian luxury car market, and the smaller Integra clainis 6.5 per cent of the sporty car market. Acura is hoping te seli 11,000 cars in 1989 alone. "The Integra has been improved in almost every area.. looks, interior spaoe, handiing, and performance. The price bas gone up, but it's still a good value .." The Integra was not an overwhelming styling success when it was introduced in March of 1987. In fact, many people preferred the looks of the Honda Accord for about. the sanie money. So it's not surprising (to mie, at least) that Acura has redesigned the new Integra 50 soon, as well as improving it in many other areas. 1990 Integra coupes and sedans are designated RS, LS, Review By Greg Wilson GS, the latter a" new trim level with more luxury features. The three-door hatchback is 60 cm longer, 5 cm wider, and 2 cm lower than last year's model. Both the three-door hatchback and four-door sedan now have a much more stylish, purposeful appearance. The five-door hatchback bas been dropped this year. Appropriately enough, the new Integra looks more expensive, since the base price 18 flow up by about $2,000. Engine size has been increased to 1.8 liters and horsepower 15 up by 10 per cent to 130 @ 6000 rpm. The Integra powerplant features all-aluxninum construction, four valves per cylinder, double overhead cams and programmed fuel irýjection. Important new features of the 1990 Integra include four-wheel fully independent double wisLne suspension, new speed-sensitive rack and pinion. *SEE PAGE 27 THE REDESIGNED Acura Integra has and a new fully independent suspen- a bigger 1.8-litre, DOHC, 16-valve, four- sion system.
