Schonfeld, a Whitby resident since March, owns and races a 1961 Volvo 544. A member of tbe Vintage Auto- mobile Racing Association of Canada (VARAC), Schonfeld pur- cbased the car in 1987. "t took four months working every day and night to get it ready for a race. t was a wreck," says Schonfeld, who began bis racing career in 1967. Hefished the car in time for one racetbat year, in Quebec. "t finished, that's about all." Last, year, Schonfeld, an engineer, picked up a mechanic and the two have been adding touches to the car ever since. The',,ýsuspension bas been redone.*è4d the engine bas seen a bit of wofrk although it basically remains the same engine as when the.car was buiît, cast iron wvith foÙn-cylinders. But P ~s are in the works for a new engine. "We are building a hot engine for it.IWwil go like a rocket." What makes Schonfeld's racing career interesting is the company he keeps on the race track. He,usually be seen careen- ing a a track with Porsches and Tr phs, all models 1961 or older. Scboffeld races in the VARAC series and, on occasion, travels to tbe United States to compete in vintage car races. "People are always asking me about tbie car. Its the only one I know of tbat is racing in Nortb Anierica.» In Canada, Scbonfeld says tbe vintage cars have to fight for room on a track. During a week- end meet, it is not unrealistic for six or seven different types of cars to use the same trac, rac- in at different tinies. CTile in theU.S. the vintage cars have sole use of1 a track for a weekend. Each race averages 10 laps and can be over in 20 minutes or less. But the drivers are not invol- ved in the sport for money, says Schonfeld. In fact, there is no prize moniey for finishing first. A trophy is aIl a driver can expect. "We're not in tbis for the prize money. We are in it simply for the fun," says Schonfeld. t costs him $10,000O annually to race, a big reason why he is looking for a spsonsor. Schonfeld began racing in 1967 when he purchased s friend's open-wheeled race car. Ln 1969 he moved to an. MGB and in 1971 was the Ontario champion in the MGB class. But then he had to decide between racing and a career. "L went to university then. Sometimes you bave to make choices that are diff"icult.» He returned'to racing acciden- taily wben, wbile attending a VARAC and told me about tbe race at Mosport in 1987, be met Volvo that was for sale." bis former driving instructor.
