Cataract surgery, knee surgery,. tubal ligations, gastroscopy, and sorne types of dental work are just a few of the procedures performed on patients who go home that same day. "Sometimes it's a bit of a juggling act trying to accommodate patient flow, given our space limitations," Bruce notes. "We can average up to twelve outpatient procedures a day with only five stretchers available, so you can appreciate the problem. We need to move people in and out quickly. However, with the kind of care we provide, and allowing for the appropriate post-surgery recovery time, traffic can get jammed up," comments Bruce. This often happens despite staff efforts to organize procedures so that things run smoothly. ýI The fracture clinic is an additional service provided out of the outpatient area.
