WHITrBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 2,1989, PAGE 13 Family ids survval---Of ba-by birds By Trudie Zavadovies Four Young birds, believed to be cedar waxwings, had to depend on Whitby resident Dianne Maxwell for survival this weekend. Two didn't make it. "I went shopping and when I came back I saw the four little birds huddled on our front lawn," says Maxwell. «We had a terrible time keep- ing them ahive." says _,4aiwe -IL "We fed them âmaII seeds with an eyedropper. Someone (a pro- fessional) told them we could feed them pablum. That's when they started dying. «Wie bost one on Sunday and one on Monday. I was just at at a loss. I made 31 calse and no one was any help. I've neyer felt 50 helpless in my whole life. "Mychildren even na med the four birds (Leader, Spikè, Sleepy and Softee) and we buried thée two that died. "The Ministry of Natural Resources are baddies who are supposed to be conservationists. Their stand is, let nature take its course, just let them be, or take them to the animal shelter and they'll put them âway. Don't interfere, don't touch them. Don't try to help them. "T'he vet's attitudes were, we just don't deal with birds. People who are supposed to care about animais say, If it's a bird, it doesn't matter. "People who deal with animais should be able to tell people like me where to go for he1p"says Maà xweèll-. «ýBrian Brasier of CLOCA was fairIy helpful. He said to caîl the Bowmanville or Toronto zoo and ask for the curator of birds.» "It's a fact of life," says Lois Deacon, Kawartha Lakes assess- ment biologist with the Ministry of Natural Rsources. "Small animais that are bat- ched do die every spring. It's bound to happen. There are no agencies to h andle- the large numbers of smaller birds. "They require almost constant feeding. For an individual to do it, the chances of success would he verv nioor."1 Deacon notes that the excep- tion to this rule would be raptors such as woodpeckers, loons, hawks and owls where there would be agencies to, take over their care. etty's 9: 1121 Fashions SIDEWALK SALE PRICES STILL.
