Every spring, summer and fall, construction crews working for provincial, regional and local governments as welI as private developers head out to tear up as many of our roads as they can afford to. Wihile the meajority of motoriste; appreciate the end results - think about what commuting would be like if we didn't maintain old roads and build new ones - the interix» 'construction zone' conditions can resuit in unnecessary delays and aggravation for many motorists and ail too frequently contribute to an accident. On congested routes the relatively low speeds tend to resuit in fender bender collisions. However, at night or during other off-peak periods where higher speeds are common, construction zone accidents can cause serious persona] injuries. The temporary presence of construction activity introduces an element of uncertainty or confusion into the driving environment. What causes the confusion? Have you ever approached a construction zone only to see one set of lane lines leading you off te the left, while a second set directs you to the right? Promu photo --v NO CHARGE AUTOMATIC available on upgraded models LRIUR mmmmmmmagIL: overcast days it is reasonably easy to distinguish the old lines from the new 'construction detour'limes. But on rainy nights or bright, sunny days it is mot as easy to tell which set of lane limes you should be following. Lane lines are important guides te motorists, so road authorities go to great efforts to ensure they are highly visible. Because they are put on so well, the limes are generally very difficuit te, remove - even when you want te. Some construction crews paint over or grind the old limes off. Unfortunately, both the black paint and the freshly ground pavement have a characteristic shine. This shine can actually made the old lines more visible on rainy nights when the wet pavement reflects your headlight beam and on bright days when the surface reflects the sunlight. By comparison, the new 9'construction zone' lane limes can appear duli and faded. Following the wrong set of lane lines nay lead you te cross the centerlime, run off the road or unintentionally change lanes. What can we do te, avoid construction zone accidents? Firat, pay attention. Cominuters in particular become too familiar with their usual route and begin to drive without giving much thought to the task at hand. Construction zones require us te think. They disrupt our otherwise familiar surroundings. Much like when furniture in your home or office if rearranged, it takes a little more time and thought to, avoid tripping over something, even things that are big and easily visible. Second, be prepared to interpret the comflicting messages, such as the oId lame markings versus the new construction zone lane limes. Look for a secomdary indicator! Concrete media-i barriers, flashing barricades, roadcside signs and other raised markers mot only identifyr the construction zone but usually give you a good indication of the general layout of the detour. Third, slow down and expect that other Totrsts will flot be paying attention. Give yoursell'more time to read the road and to react if YOu Or another motorist makes a mistake. Don't let someone else involve you in their accident. In a construction zone, drive the sanie way you would in any other unfamliar environiment - drive a littie slower and pay a lot more attention. Almost without exception, construction zone accidents are avoidable. Enjoy the season - drive safely. Ic FUEL INJECTION 5 * )m a test drive. while it has ail the agility of a true off-road vehicte.
