PAGE 4p WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 14, 1989 St. Elizabeth nurses make 1,500 vinsits eacrh month Although St. Elizabeth Visting Nurses' Association of Ontario has only been in Durham Region since September, nurses are already making 1,500 visits a month. The association recently opened its office in the Whitb FCorporate Centre Dundas St. E. The director for l5urhamn Region is Joan Lesmond. «Home Care and the Ministry of Health invited us out to Dur- ham Region,» said Lesmond. The association bas been operating in Metropolitain Toronto and Peel Re *n snce1908. . Eizabeth nurses are simi- lar to the Victorian- Order of Nurses, explains Lesmond. The 17 registered nurses help patients cope at home. Patients include mothers who have just given birth and are discharged early, kids ini the school programn who become sick, blind indivi- duals, pallative care patients and at least four AIDS patients. Lesmrond said th e association was invited to Durham.because of the tremendous growth in the area. The nurses set up their office, with a $10,000 contribution by the United Way of Newcastle- Oshawa-Whitby. Patients must have OHIP and a family doctor to qunify for home visits. Liesmond said the association had no trouble hiring nurses as the nurses enjoy the one-on-one care they can gîve. Lesmiond says an additional nurse will have to be hired this August to keep up with the demand. Visits can last anywhere from haîf an hour to an hour. A nurse is also available 24 hours a day. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The phone number is 430-6997. Public meetingsheld for fourý subdivisions Public meetings were held iast week for the draft plans of three subdivisions, ail located west of Garrard Rd., between Rossland and Taunton Rds. Steele Valley Developments proposes 226 single family homes and 82 street townhouses and Fra nstutinLtd. proposes 181 single family homes, 15 semi-lots (30 units) and a 100- unit block townhouse develop- ment, both just south of Taunton Rd..E. on vacant land. Further south, an application by Vinoe Corvinelli proposes a 137-unit subdivision composed of 88 singles, 21 semi-lots and seven single family links, on a property which now bas two houses. A third public meeting was held for an aplication b- Chidley Glen Deelopment ,Ltd. for 76 single family lots on a vacant proer at the southwest corner of Taunton Rd. E. and Garden St. The proposed subdivision plans falis within a biock'of the rejstered Graywood subdivision. Te block was previously pro- po sed for a Dur ham Board of Education secondary school site, but the board did not pick up the option from the develdper to pur- chase the block as an alternative school site was found. Planning department will report on ail applications after ail agency commenta. and public input have been received.
