PAGE 10, WMIrY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY; JUNE , 1989 'Jay McCarten: Figuire - Sha- dow - Image,' an exhibition by Whitby artist Jay McCarten, will on at the Robert McLaughlin Gfallery tomorrow (Thursday, June 8.- McCarten is an abstract artist who uses imaes often figures combined with the shadows they cast to express the urban environment. "The figure and shadow are in many of my works because they help explain how the three-dm nsioal world (in my work, the figure) relates te the abstract, two-dimensional world (the shadow) '" says McCarten. In 1968 he moved te Thickson's -Point. Since then he has found more natural imagery coniing into his work. He je a cheerful colorist and bis torquoises, oranges, and reds express a buoyant optimism. Throughout his work he likes to neditate on past masters such as the Cubists, Matisse, and the abstract expressiomests, asý well as on more personal matters. McCarten studies at the Ontario College of Art and at Durhazn College. He works ini the firm 'Nature's Are~ as a landscape designer. A catalogue to accompany the exhibition will be lavailable at the gallery. AN INUIT art display, including a g<hotorphic studyý by John Reeves, bgan June 3 at The Station Gailerv in Whitby and continues until July 2.I Vince Ohprecbo.Free Pross photoj Rehearsals begin for'Dreams' Rehearsals are underway for 'Dreains,' the Whitby Courthouse Theatre Youth Group show that opens June 22 an d continues until June 25. It's an original mini-musical that uses the theme of drearns as the starting point for a series of improbable comic adventures in- volving the 20-meniber cast. Musical numbers include four original songe by local pianist Silver Lfor singers The Oshawa Festival Singers, an all-girls' group, won a silver medal at Musicfest Canada held in Toronto recently. The group qualified for the event by winning a gold medal at the Ontario Vocalfest held in April. The singers have now finished for the season. Auditions for next season will be held Friday, June 9 and Friday June 16 at Knox Prysbeteriarx Church on Simcoe St. N. in Oshawa. Cail Lorie Easton-Flynn for an appointm ent. The choir is looking for girls aged il to 17 who can read music. The choir is also planning a tour of Britain in 1990. Practices are held every Friday night from 6 to 8p.m. The choir wiil start up again in September. and composer Myra White, who also serves as musical director. The show was written by Boyd Tattrie, based on suggestions fromn the cast. The author is also directing for the first time, he played a role as director in the recent 'Noises Off' production. The cast is composed of both new and returning Youth Group members aged il to 15. Return- ing members include Kevin Har- per, who received a s pecial nomination for his offstage screanxs for 'The Creature Creeps' at the recent AOTCO regi onal community theatre fes- tivaà l. Kevin Arbour, who also received a nomination for his work in the sanie show, is techni- cal director in this show. May Martin (1865-1957) beganJ une 1 at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery and con- tinues until July 7. The titles of Martin's exhibited or dated works gives us indications of her travels through Ontario, Quebec, and elsewhere. E~. May Martin was a painter of considerable menit. Yet despite certain recognition in her lifetime, she remained neglected until the Robert McLaughlin Gallery organized an exhibition of her work in 1980. The present exhibition comprises work by the artist inclided in our permanent collection. These beautifully executed Victorian watercolors will be a source of viewing pleasure for many gallery visitera. 'Let 's Dance' at Henry 'Let's Dance,' a dance recital by tha Arthur Murray Dance Studio of Whitby, will be held Friday, June 23 at Henry Street Hig h School.
