Fetteroif spoke of the effort made by his company for a safer workplace after a few fatalities called attention ta the unsafe conditions of work at Alcoa in Pittsburgh. "We are striving, but we are stili subject to catastrophic events. We run our company with a (safety) management comn- mittee."l To make safety work in the workplace, Fetteroîf said a -comn- pany "nust have leadership from the top from senior manage- men, Yu get what you expect. He said safety is more impor- tant than production, and work- ing safe means everyone in the company must be involved. At Alcoa, everyone, inicluding tran- sient workers, must be made aware of safety standards. Fetteroif said the standards also apply ot Alcoa's operations in other countries. "The corporate safety depart- ment established a corporate safety statement,' and a safety program was started. We train every employee who works at Alcoa. "It's a safer place ta work in than 10 years ago, when we had 9.1 seriaus accidents per 100 employees. Today we have 3.86 per 100 employees. "But we're not satisfied with' this. After a-few phone caîls, Rodley and ber husband Jim decided ta, open a Hoiîy market, the largest grocery delivery service in Canada, in Whitby. Located at 1610 McEwen Dr., unit 4, the store- is serving the Whitby/Oshawa area. .The store carrnes just over 1 000 items, only the best avail- atle, according ta Rodley, and offers free deliver within three *hours or at a specified tîme. A caîl is made ta, a special 1-800 number (1-800668-9333) which gives the caller a central offfice. The order is placed usually taking 10 minutes, ancâ is then passed on ta the Whitby store. Rodley says that when orders are placed, as one buys more of a particular item, there is a corées- ponding decrease in price. She says the original idea for Hal markets was ta, provide a needed service ta seniors, the disabled and handicapped.
