PAGE 28, WhlTBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MAY 24, 1989 Board budget includes revised transportation policy By Debbie Luchuk The Durham Board of Educa- tion's revised transportation policy will go into force this fall 1ith funding from the 1989 budget. French immersion students, special education and other spe- cial program students, and more secondary students are included in the revised policy, approved in principle last year by the board butnot implemented when it was not included in the 1988 budget. The policy provides for trans- I DURHAM portation of al elementary stu- dents living beyond a 1.6-km. walking distance from the school that they attend (with exceptions made for students having an unsafe route to walk); and for transportation of secondary stu- dents living 3.2 km from their school. A separate policy was con- sidered at the beginning of 1988 for French immersion busing. But after heated deliberations, the board decided instead that a board-wide revised policy was the best approach. The new policy benefits French immersion students of F.M. Heard public school, and will assist secondary students from Whitby to get to French immer- sion classes at R.S. McLaughlin High School in Oshawa. These students had been without bus- ing, and many parents had been forced to drive or find other means of getting students to these programs. Durham board route super- visor. "No one really wants to talk about death or dying but it's one of the few sure things in life," said Marion Irwin, who chairs the Hospice steering committee, at a recent press conference held to inform the media of a survey the group is carrying out to learn more about the needs of ter- minally ill patients. Surveys are being sent out to 400 physicians and 60 health care agencies in the area. As well, the group wants to hear from those who have had experienced or are experiencng terminal illness in their family. "In the past, families would care for the dying at home. That doesn't happen often now and with modern technology, if you have a terminal diagnosis, it can be stretched out," says Irwin. The survey will give the group a better understanding of the - needs of the terminally ili. They have formulated what they believe or 12 important needs and they are hoping the survey will either confirm their findings or let them know they are "in left field," according to Irwin. One need could be a physical hospice building, but Irwin says that would be in the longterm. In the more immediate future is training for volunteers and an exchange of information between agencies now offering hospice care. Marion noted that Oshawa General Hospital has a a hospice team for those that may need immediate assistance. The survey is expected to be completed by the end of August. To help the group, Irwi can be reached at 668-4339 or call Donna Muir, survey coordinator, at 433-4262. THE.
