Trveed at The Station Gallery in Free Proeff photo 'ieniie' helpiec by fine acting By Debbie Luchuk Dramatic productions with "the small town" as a focus can often trivialize the real existence hopes and dreams of the small town dweller. However, William Inge's 'Pic nic ' the Whitby Courthouse Theatre's latest production, is a look at the superficial image of the snialI town, and beyond, into often troubled soul of the com- munity. The action of the play takes p lace in the yard.shared by Fl Owens, and neighbor Helen Potts. The key character, Hal Carter, comes into town tog t a job through a former fraternity brother, Alan Seymor, and stirs up a whole range of conflicts and emotions within the rather quiet comTnunity. Strong acting for this story of young romance makes 'Picnic' a firat-rate endeavor by the award- winning Courthouse Theatre members. A powerful perfor- mance is given by Steve Foote as Hal Carter. Foote is completely convincing, capturing his c harac- ter's inner turmoil. Pamn Dyck, as the main female character, Madge Owens, effec- tively conveys to the audience the young girl's search for iden- tity. And a fine performance is gv en by Frances Helyar in the rle of Millie Owens, Madge's brainy sister. Helyar displays a full range of emotion, from ribald humor to feelings of insecurity, with intensity. Supporting acting is flawless.
