Fr.. Prem photo The Ministry of Health and Welfare has approved $993,055 in funding for Durham College of Ap li ed Arts and Technology u rthe Child Care Initiative Fund. Over the next thiree years these funds will b. used to establish an early childhood education resource centre and a model conimunitv child care centre in the Pickering/Aà ax area. This centre will serve as a resource and learning facility to child care workers through observation of the operation of.a quality work prograin and the opportîunity for practical work experience.. The board of the child care centre will serve also as a means for training other community child care boards. Gary Polonsky, president Of Durhamn College, said Mary Lynn West-Moynes and her colleagues as well as local MPs Ros Stevenson and Rene Soetens made the project Possible. Polonsky went on ta explain that part and parcel of this project is the second lab day care centre. "We will be lookcing for a corporate partner in the lpceig a area who would be willing ta work with us to provide a workplace day care centre" said Polonsky. 1I arndelighted this funding haà been made ta, Durham College for a project of this nature," Stevenson stated. "It shouldp ut thema on the leading edge of the devlopment ana training for child care in the Durhamn Region and ail Ontario." "I believe this is an excellent federal initiative which, most certainly, will benefit not only my own riding of Ontario but aur entire area," said Soetens. The federal Child Cure Initiatives Fund provides financial assistance ta groups and organizations that, through their projects, develop innovative approaches to child care acros the country. Particular emphass is placed on addressing the needs of familles in Unique circuinstances or in underserved areas. The fund is not meaxit to cover operating cons for chIld care facilities, but rather the costs connected with research, development and demnotrations of new approaches. lI the Pickering-Ajax- Northumberland area the number of children urider age 12 has risen by 45.8 per cent in the past six years, and it 'bas one of the fastest growxng population rates in Canada. With the Early Childhood Education training programi in the area, Durhamn College has been exideavoring with some difflculty to keep up with the demand for q=ulfied staff.
