(DRO) bas been given 12-month notice by Durham Region council while a review is undertaken of -recycling in the region. We review was recommended by Recycling Development Corp. which did a review of the Region's recycling prograin. The report found that while DRC deserves credit for the emergence of recycling in the Région, changes are needed if the Région is ta, reach its goal of recycling 25 per cent of its gar- bage, averaging 300,000 tonnes a year, by 1993. During that 12-month period the report urged the Région to look at three options: - Allow DRC to continue hand- ling receycling; - Tender recycling to a private company; - Get tbe area municipalities involved by letting them collect recyclable material and the Region process and market the material. No public discussion has been held about tbe future of tbe 40 fulI-time employees now employed at the' centre. Eployees had begun to nego- tiate collective agreement wben the 12-month notice was given.
