A speciai logo was designed and is worn by each member as a crst or pin this year. And to recognize Lady Baden-Powell's concern for service to others, a centennial challenge was issued to ail members of Girl Guides of Canada: to enrich life in their community through a service pro.ject chosen by the unit. TJ.he theme for Thinking Day 1989 was "peace." Slaughter says that's significant for guides since Lady Baden-Powell -hoped that the thoughts and wishes of guides everywheré- would "go with the highest and the best towards the spreading of true peace and goodwill on earth." Four Whitby girls were also recent reci pients of Duke of Edinburgh bronze level awards, representing at least ei ght years (fo pahfides) ir .0years 1(ranrer yul uof civititFsin' guiding. To acheîve the award, girls work on a wide range of activi- ties including swimming, hiking, driving lessons, photography music and helping with local brownie and guide units Whitby has four guide districts - White Pine, Marigold, Centen- niai and Trafalgar, each taking in différent territories. - with another area in Brooklin. They are. five of the eight units in Ontario division, th e others in Uxbridge, Port Perry and Sun- derland. There, are about 1,600 brownies, guides and pathfinders in the division, as well as the new programn "sparks," for five- year-olds.- Whitby alone has about 900 girl guide members. Ontario division has agreed to send money to the World Worl- dlife Fund to help preserve the rainforests. And for Thinking Day, White Pine district focused on endangered species (a badge has been proposedi).
