MARCH 1. 1989 Whitby schools in top four at DYSSA Anderson CVI won the girls' championship and Henry Street High-School was second overal at the Durham-York (DYSSA) swim championships, last week in Pickering, While erek Phillips led Henry with three wins, Anderson girls, led by Wendy Primeau, won eight events. Lori Melien won the 50-metre (open) freestyle and 200m med- ley, and was second to Anderson teammate Primeau in the 200m (open) freestyle. Primeau also won the 100m freestyle and 400m open freestyle. Heather Armitage of Anderson won the 100m open fly and 100m (open) backstroke. Anderson alsç won the 200m medley relay and Henry's girls' team won th( 200m free relay. In previous playoff gamnes, Whitby defeated Markham 2-0, beat Newmarket 6-4 and then Josh Evans and Brian Harri- son tamed for the shutout against Markham, with goals scored by Mark Hayýnes and -Dar- ryl Lewis. Bryan Crouch and Scott Young each scored twice while Lewis and Paul Gray had singles in the G-4 win over Newmarket. Lewis had two goals with sin- l1es to Crouch, Brian Crilly G ray' Chris Kerr, Haynes anci Brian Vinent in the 8-1 win. Crouch had four goals and Lewis two against Richmond Hlili. Strong, 16, in her first com- petition since she finished 36th at the Summer Olympics in Seoul, Korea, had a total of 76.80 points to capture the Elite titie. Larissa Lowing of Pickerng, formerly of Witby, was fourth ov.erail with 74.32 points. Lowing was another mnember of Canada's wcmen'ls gymnastics teami at the O'lympics. Second overali was Leah I-omma of Toronto and third was Stella Umieh of Mississauga. Strong was competing for the first timne since she broke a bone ini her right leg at the Olympics. In a tournamnent in Ottawa Feb. 9-12, Whitby was edged 4-3 by Gloucester in the final game for the championship. Gloucester ha d defeated Whitby 3-0 in the first game of the tournament for both teams. But Whitby came back to defeat Ajax 6-2, North Bay 5-3 and Cumberland 4-2 to reach the f inal. Whitby pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker in the"late stages of the final game against Gloucester but couldn't tie the game. Lewis scored two goals and Haynes had one in the final. Against Ajax, Lewis scored twice with singles to Vinent, Ricica, Bryden Dehyes and Havnes. Crouch and Lewis each had two goals and Gray one against North Bay. Haynes hd two goals and Crouch and Young one each against Cumberland. Hlemry team ini DYSSA Hýenry Street High Schiool's senior and junior girls' volleybafl teams have both advanced to DYSSA competition after strong showings at the LOSSA tourna- ment held last Thursday. The senior team outlasted a strong O'Neill team to place f»irst in their division. After Henry won the first game of the best-of-three-game final by a score 15-7, O'Neill won the second game 15-13, forcing a third game. Henry prevailed 15-3, clinch- ing top spot. Henry had earlier defeated Paul Dwyer, Anderson CVI and Pickering to advance to the final. By finishing second, O'Neill also won the right to represent Durham at DYSSA, to be held today (Wednesday, March 1) in Markham. The final finishes were reversed for the junior teams as ONeilI defeated Henry in the final, 15-9, 13-15 and 15-2. Henry defeated Dunbarton, Denis O 'Connor and Donevan to reach the final. Bantams move on Whitby's minor bantanî B hockey team bas advanced to the next round of playoffs after a recent 8-3 victory over Markham. Geoif Cadan had three goals and Steve Katsikaris had two in the win. Mike Brillinger, Brad Stella and Steve Wyrozùb also scored. Whitby will now play Owen Sound. Eastdale eliminates -Ilawks A 3-1 loss to Eastdale ended the high school hockey season for Henry Street Hawks last week. The semi-final win sent East- dale to the final against Done- van, the game played at Iroquois Park Tuesday (resuit not known at «press time). Scott Fairbrother scored the onljy goal for Henry. Hienry, sixth during the regu- lar schedule, had reached the semi-final with a 5 -2 win last week over Ajax Rams, third in the league. Sean Whitehead scored three goals for Henr-y wit Brent Knowles and Mike Garton get- ting singles. Whitehead was handed a one-game suspension after an infraction in the game, and missed the encounter with Eastdale.
