(416) 432-2951 (800) 263-3810 - MEMBER OMBA - - MORTGAGE BROKER - By Debbie Luchuk Celebrating its first annivers- ary, the Whitby Rotary Sunrise Club acted as hosts for Whitby's original Rotary Classic Club at a recent dinner. Keynooe speaker was John Spragge, president of CALCOM, a consulting, advising, lecturing and communication organization specializing in adult education, training and motivation semi- nars for conferences and conven- tions. He is well known as former program director and vice pre- sident of progamming at the radio station CFRB, Toronto. A Rotarian, Spragge spoke on the qualities of t he service club. "I don't make speeches. My address will be an anthology of thoughts and anecdotes as a Rotarian," Sprage said. Spragema defour main points ofdefinition for Rotarian- ism in his address, using the "anecdotes" of his experience as a Rotarian. "Canada is rich in natural resources. I say every country in the world is rich in natural resources -its people. We've swept our people concerns under the rug," he said. Addressin gthe rule that Rotarians identify themselves usin career classifications, he add d, "It's not classifications, it's people that make Rotary. It's not the classification, but whether the person will make a good Rotarian. "In Whitby Rotary, the dif- ference is you." The second factor of Rotarian- ism that Spragge identified was the individual in the group. "«Except for going to work to get the dirt, we work to fulfill a need to belong to a team. We all need to be a part of a team, and this is a big reason for belong ng to Rotary. "The principal pleasure I derive from Rotary is to talk about things in general, and con- centrate on people for who they are, not for that which they sign themselves, in different businesses. "There are certain goals that can be met only by a group." Personalities contribute to the achievements of the group as the third factor of Rotarianism. "Personality is important. If I asked each one of you what you do when out here or at work, we all do a variety of things. We weren't born Rotarians; we became Rotarians after a few years." "If you want to be creative, use the other half of your strength - the uniqueness and personalities of Rotarians. The fourth factor, classification according to career, was the last subject Spragge touched on. Instead of classification, Spragge said, "we should all wear a badge that says "custo- mer service. "It's a curious merger, and we're drawn together by a com- mon bond: service. Service 50 rears ago would have 'meant ard work, for example, a barn- raismng. "Service was simple, effective, with immediate payout. The next avenue of service was when women took baskets to the poor, and the volunteer sector was created. "Here we are in the informa- tion society; is Rotary still rele- vant? Yes2 Stop sign direction to bechanged The east-west stop signs on Burns St. W. will be changed to north-south, Whitby council deci- ded Monday night. Work crews will place four-way stop signs at the three intersec- tions on Burns, at King St., Centre St. and Byron St. The east-west signs will then be removed in three months. But on a recommendation from councillor Marcel Brunelle, the four-way stop will remain at Burns and Centre Sts. "The people in that area have concerns their street will become a raceway," said Brunelle.. It will cost the Town $2,000 to install the signs. Durham Region last week approved four-way stops at Burns and Henry, and at Athol and Ontario Sts. You've been on the go since early th~is morning. So tonight, slow down, relax and let us make dinner!
