mc~w( JERRY'S and Franklin's on Brock St. N. were to remain closed until Stores closed to investigate fumes Jerys The Drug Warehouse and Franklin Frozeni Foods at 311 Brock St. N. have been losed since Sunday after the Whîtby fire department was cal- led to investigate a foui odor. The department ordered the two stores evacuated after taking readings of fumes in the base- ment of Franklins, the former Canadian Tire store. "They were as high as you can get. It was over 100. The needle was right off the end," said fire chief Ed Crouch. Crouch said the department used an explosion meter to take readings of fumes in the store. The meter measures the "expio§iveness» of a product, explai'ed Crouch, who said the cause of the fumes, as of Mon- day, was undetermined. The departmerit was called at 11:43 a.m. Sunday morning and made the decision to close the building at 12:45 p.m. There had been concern that the fumes were from the site of the recently closed Canadian Tire gas bar but Crouch said that was just an assumption. "There is a smell and it is a petroleum product of some type, but we don't know what it is, said Orouch. The department had been cal- led to the building for a- similar incident last Deoember. 'The building W'ill be shut down until the problem is correc- ted," said Crouch who must give permission for l~e building to, reopen.
