"When are we goinïg to corne to grip s with this problem?" asked oshawa councillor Jim Potticary, at a works committee meeting last week.. "One solution would be to build a new building," com- mented Oshawa's Linda Dionne. But works chairman John Aker of Oshawa reminded com- mittee that litigation is stili underway between Oshawa and Durham Region after the last debate on a new headquarters. Oshawa bas claimed part ownership of the headquarters building estimated to be worth $3.5 miflion. Oshawa is taking the Region to court over the matter. "That litigation should be determined first," said Aker, who reminded committee that a vote in 1987 to build a new headquar- ters lost by one vote. "It bas to be a better than majorit consensus for a new building," said Aker. "CBut there are 16 new council- lors. You could get a différent vote," replied Potticary. Chief administrative officer Don Evans informed committee that staff have not looked at a new headquarters since the lost vote in 1987. He told committee any decision to pursue the mat- ter would have to be political. > Dionne said she would raise the issue at today's (Wednesday, Jan. 25) meeting of regional council. The consultants' report indica- ted it will cost $14,800 to- provide immediate relief of overheating. Measures to be taken includTe reflective window film and adding indoor/outdoor controllers to coordinate the heating requirements of the building with outdoor air temperatures. The consultant also reported a further study would be needed on the air conditioning but esti- niated the cost to be $750,000 for improvenients. lJFFJmr2 we Works
