'The Sports Nutt'is owned and operated by Randy Potter, a three-year resident of Whitby. <¶[ didn't want to locate in a mail. I was iooking for a spot in downtown.,» said Potter, who is also em ployed at General Motors. The store is located at 124 Dundas St. W. The store offers a variety of sports articles including basebal and hockey cards, hockey sticks, old programs, magazines and calendars. "We are mostly hockey- and baseball-oriented b ut we do have other sport items.» A collector of sports articles for the past three years, Potter had always wanted to open his own store and says he "finally got the guts" to do it. The most popular items at the store are Toronto Blue day base- baIl cards, which Potter says outsell Toronto Maple Leaf hockey cards. "The Blue Jays, are far more eular than the Leafs, " said 'otter whose most unique item is a 1953 basebali card of Jackie Robinson. He aiso has autographs of sport celebrities such as boxer Muhammad Ali, hockey's Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Gar Lem an, and baseball's Gary Carter. On Monday night, parks and recreation director Larry Morrow presented council with the new fées, the five-per cent increase attributed to inflation. For use of the Anne Ottenbrite pool at Iroquois Pool, the Town has raised the rate for semi- private children's swimming les- -' sons more than five per cent, to $40 from $35. Private lessons have no more than three children at a time. Group lessons, which usually have six to 10 children, have increased in price te $36 from $34. Other new rates include: - adult public skating - $1.75 per person, from $1.50; - public swimming, a book of 10 tickets, $14, up from $12; - three-month famiiy public swimming pass, $45, up from $40; - one-year famiiy swimming pass, $85, up from $80; - public pool rental rates, $39.50 per hour, up from $37. The Whitby Iroquois Swim- ming Club will pay $26.75 per hour for afternoon use of the pool, up from $25.50 per hour; and $11.50 per hour for morning use, up from $11. Competing in five age divisions wvil1 be teains from Kingston, sudbury, Smiths Falls, Lindsay, Mariposa, Pickering, Markham, Scarborough, Ajax and Guelph, and the host Whitby teams. There will be four teams in the belle (aged 16 to 18) division, four teams in junior (aged 14 an~d 15), four teams in tween (aged 12 and 13), eight teams in petite (aged 10 and 11) and six teams in novice (aged 8 and 9). Games start at 3 p.m. Friday and continue ail day Saturday at Iroquois Park.
