Rachel Wells, 19, is part of the "Youth With a Mission" team that left for Honduras Dec. 31. Team members are all from the Youth with a Mission School of the Performing Arts of Cam- bridge, Ont. Seniors' centre gets provincial grant A $28,000 provincial grant has been awarded to the Whitby Seniors' Activity Centre to pro- mote healthy lifestyles. The two-year project, to be Retirement planning pro gram at library A retirement planning pro- gram for Whitby residents will be offered at the Whitby Public Library on Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. starting Jan. 24. Organized by the library and Town parks and recreation department, the six-week pro- gram will present information on pelnsions, taxation, investments, egal issues, use of I eisure time, health, housing and general retirement options. Cost is $20, with registration at the com- munity information centre at the library or at the parks and recreation department in the municipal building. Building fund at $14,500 The Whitby Seniors' Activity Centre building fund reached $14'534 - plus one Canadian Tire 10-cent coupon - as of Dec. 12. Members of the centre seek to raise $100,000 to add more space and facilities. im lemented by the centre, will lin seniors' organizations with local health profession als and community groups. Increased awareness will be made of nutrition, stress and fitness through neighborhood healthy workshops and drop-in progr ams. "One of the important aspects of this project is that seniors themselves will help with its development, thus taking advan- tage of their lifelong knowledge and experience," said Allan Fur- long, Durham Centre MPP who announced the grant made by the Ministry of Health. The project is one of 23 new community-based initiatives in Ontario promotinghealthy life- styles. A total of $950,000 will bel spent over two years. The Whitby project was recom- mended by the Durham Region District Health Council. The group is interdenomina- tional, and all members are aged 18 to 26. "We'l be working with the church Amorvivicente in San Pedro Sula, and touring basically through northwestern Honduras, various towns," Wells said. The clown and drama groups will be performing from Jan. 4 to the end of the month in Hon- duras.
