Rob Edmonstone of 915 Green St. was upstairs in the residence when the fire started. Durham Regional Police report the fire started at 5 a.m. in the basement of the residence. A 51-year-old woman, Joan Ames, was in the basement when the fire started. She escaped without injury. Police believe the fire wvas caused by careless smoking. Damage is estimated at $3,000.
