Clean it up The Canadian electorate that took advantage of their democratic right and voted in Monday's election have decided the country's destiny. PCBs not evident during fire, says LASCO president To the editor: The recent PCB incident at LASCO has been a major concern to the company and * t me as president. It does not reflect the extensive effort our people went to in satisfying ail Ministry of Environment requirements in establishing a registered PCB storage site at LASCO. Fortunately, there was no harm done te any persons in this incident. A complete dlean-up of the site is now underway. A number of concerns have been expressed with regard to LASCO's promptness in alerting the general public of possible risks. It should be clearly understood that, at the time of the fire, there was no suggestioni of PCBs being involved. This fact did not become evident until several days later as a result of routine chemîcal sampling by the ministry. When LASCO was informed by the ministry that PCBs were involved, we informed ail of our employees of the nature of the investigation. I decided it was unwarranted te alarm neighbors after the fact without the ministry's decision of possible danger to the public. The one point I wish to makze as strongly as I can is that LASCO and ail of its employees are part of this community and we care deeply about its welfare. Most of us who work at LASCO make our home in Whitby and Oshawa. We are not separate or different fromn anyone ie who lives here. We take pride in. our work and in our community and we are no less determined than anyone to make them free from hazard. We live in a time of increasing demand for protection of our environment - and there are many things to protect it from. LASCO agrees with envir- onmental protection and remains committed to put ever increasing effort into doing it right. L.C. Hutchinson President and Chief Executive Officer LASCO Steel Resi*dent nuffed at department 'oversight' To the editor- I attended a public works committee meeting Nov. 8 concemning developmnent in north Whitby and its effect on residents who use well water. I came away appalled by the attitude of some members of that committee. I How could it happen?. To the editor.- How can this happen? I refer te the photo (Free Press, Nov. 9/88) of a bulldozer demolishing the pre-188O smoke- house and apple barn on the Carnwith mansion property. I couldn't believe my eyes. How could we let what little we have of our past te be demolished? We were fortunate te have some of the original buildings of pioneer days stilI standing. To ha ave such buildings demolîshed, te me, is or should be a crime. These buildings are what make a town unique in my eyes - they add to the character and charm. I am in shock to see this happen te part offour town, te a building I thought was protected by the Histerical Society, to a building I thought the Renascent Found- ation said they and preserve. happen? would look after How can thi s Stunned Diane Rooney Brooklin A thank you to sponsor To the editon- Our association would like te express gratitude to the teani sponsors for the 1988 season. We urge al parente and girls te extend their thanks te sponsors by returning their support. Whitby Girls Softball Association also resent comments made by one member intimating that I cannot tell the difference between electioneering and fact. The fact is that because of an "oversight," the councils and planning departments, both local and regional failed to conduct adequate surveys te determine the implications the development west of Clear Spring Road would have on the water table. Because of this "oversight' my well has been affected, the water is contaminated and very low. So what are my options? I have none. I need water, therefore I have te take Town water. Through no fault of mine I have no option but te be hooked up onto town water - for me this incurs the expense of hookup and connection fees, increase in taxes and a w'ater bill every two months. After spending this money I will be receiving water, of which I had an abundant qupply until two and a haif years ago when, because of an "oversight," the water table was darnaged. I wonder; if I tamper with the environment and by doing so mrate a problem in two and a haîf years time, will it be considered an "oversight?"
