The.classes feature low impact aerobics, stretching and tening exercises, accompanied by music that, appeals te niany seniors, such as big band music. "Well and EFt"originally started with the openingof the chiropractors' duic and subsequent back- care exerci se classes. The Family Wellness Cinic offers a nutritionist, chiropractors and a psychobogist as part of the complete wellness concept, as well as the new exercise programs. "Slow, gentle exercises are done, sometimes using chairs as propa. I encourage seniors te, listen te, their own body," Carole Seens, instructer of the classes, said. Fellowship and fun are two of the objectives of the classes, she added, as many seniors benefit from the interaction as much as the exercise. I see a real difference after two or three months, an improvement in stamina (in seniors participating in the prga)," Seens said. If 'a senior is dealîng with a weight problem, he or she would be referred te the nutritionist on site and teld te walk between classes. Seens advises seniors taldng her classes te get a docter's advice if dealing with a heart or other problem that may limit partic- ipation in the classes. Good supporting shoes are a necessity, and comfortable clothes such as sweatpants, sweatshirt or t-shirt. "t really has to be a lifestyle change. Corne on out and have fun, and enjoy yourself," Seens said. The classs are operated in eight-week segments, two classes a week, for $50. Centre reorg'anizes .,diet The. nutritiona! needs of seniors do flot change drastically, uponretire:ment but caloric needs aedecreased as years go by, according to staff of the Weight Counselling Centre. When living alone, seniors often do not eat properly. Children are gone yet parents with empty nests may continue to make large portions of food as if their children were there, and maybe eat more than they should. Or perhaps a senior may lose interest in niaking balanced meals, feeling that these dinners are only justà fied b a larger family unit. Usually tzhe resultant diet is starchy, fatty and nutritionally poor from reliance on -processed foods. How does one eat less and still feel satisfied, and receive-ail the, Vital nutrients? The Weight Counselling Centre ofWhitby can help seniors reorganize their diet along Canada's FoodGuide rules, and lose weight in a healthy manner. One-to-one attention is pro- vided te each customer by professional nurses and nutrition- ists, with special attention te medical conditions- such as diabetes, hypertension, and aller- gies.
