PAGE 18, WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY,NOVEMBER 23, 1988 Much to offer at Whitby Racquetbàll and FitnessCUub By Feroneh Neil The Whitby Racquetball and Fitness Club, a division of Pegasus Clubs, has lots to offer its members. In addition to racquetball, there are aerobics classes, fitness equipment, entertainment in the lounge - all adding up to popular social environment. The Whitby club, located at 1100 Champlain Crt. in Whitby's industrial area, was the second of the four clubs established by Pegaëùs, which consists of a group of shareholders. They currently have no interest in making any addditions to the chain. New manager Cathy Corcoran feels that having a location in Whitby was a gQod idea. "There have been more and more people moving out of Toronto to here," she says. "We also get people from Toronto, Pickering and as far as Bowmanville." Corcoran worked five years wir,h the clubs and previously was at the Agincourt establishment before locating in Whitby. Court times are Monday to Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.; weekends and holidays, 8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. The lounge is always open until 1 a.m. House league racquetball is played all week while there are members' tournaments about once a month. Court time is booked up to a week in advance, and paid by 40-minute segments, although there is no limit to time. For players that wish to book a certain day for a certain time, the club offers a method called 5lock booking. "The members can book a certain day and time fr a 13-week period," Corcoran' explains. "If a member decides that he cannot play on a certain day, and he already has his block booking in, then as long as he lets the club know 24 hours in advance, he will get a full refund for that day." Although racquetball is the main sport that is played, there is one other offered called Wallyball. "Wallyball is played like volleyball, in a court, which is 40 m I by 20 feet," says Corcoran. 'There are about four players on each side and they can use the walls." In addition to the two team- oriented games, there are a variety of other things available to occupy members' time as well. "We have 13 racquetball courts, an indoor track, lifecycles, free weights, global gym equipment, nautilus, saunas, whirlpools, an outdoor pool and aerobics classes, amoung the things that are offered," says Corcoran. "Aerobic classes are offered four times a day from Monday to Friday, and once during the weekend." Other features include a supervised nursery for mothers with small children as well as a chiropractor." "A chiropractor cornes in twice a week for people with bad backs. What they will do is talk to the person and then that person will go and see his own chiropractor Both are fairly popular." There are two different time distinctions, prime time and non-prime time. Prime time hours are from 5 to 10 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 9 a.m The rink of skip Steve Tooze, vice Jane Tooze, second Stan Forshaw and lead Elaine Forshaw won the Whitby Fabrics mixed bonspiel on Nov. 12 at the Whitby Curling Club. Runner-up was the rink of skip Dick Sandrelli, vice Heather Miller, second Mike Halliday and lead Gloria Halliday. Winner of the two-game high (draw 1) was the rink of skip Clyde Johnston, vice Kelly Chesson, second Mike Chesson to 6 p.m. on Sundays. Non-prime time hours are from 6:40 a.m. to 4:40 p.m. weekdays; 8 to 9 a.m. and 6 to 11 p.m. Sundays. Saturdays and holidays feature non-prime rates all day. "The non-prime time hours are slower, and not as crowded," she explains. "It's like a kind of bonus for coming into the club at those time periods when it's is not so busy. It is good because some of our members are housewives that can only come in during the day. It's also good for people who work shifts." The club offers the services of its lounge both to members and non-members. "There is a balance between the members' usage of the lounge and the club's usage of the lounge," Corcoran remarks. "It can be used for private parties, or the club uses it for public showings. 'We are also offering a trip up to Killington Vermont in February te ski," she adds. "We want te give the members to give a chance te go different places and get away from it all." and lead Lucy Johnston. In the two-game high (draw 2), the top rink was skipped by Richard Turner, with vice Maria Bennett, second John Bennett and lead Elaine Turner. One-game high (draw 1) winner was the rink of skip Brent Dewar, vice Kathy McLaughlin, second Joe McLaughlin and lead Gina Dewar.
