WITBY FRE pRESS, H-ome Improvements, NOVEMBER 2,1988, PAGE A3 FALLIIOMlEiMPOEMN By Design Cabinets Ltd.. Pickering In recent years a renaissance of sorts bas taken place in the de- sign and renovation of residential interiors. The itchen is again be- coming the family and social hub of the household. As always, food is' stored, prepared and eaten in this space but, the space bas been expanded physically to become part of the general living space as well. Kitchens are opened up te family rooms, formai dining rooms, enclosed sun rooms and decks. Well designed homes are plan- ned to reflect the way a modemn family lives. Physically, the kit- chen space should be designed to handie the traffic flow within the itchen work areas as well as the flow of traffic to other areas of the home. A kitchen should blend in- te the rest of the spaces of the home; neither overpowering or understating any ancillary areas. These concepts can easily ho designed into, a home; but only if the house has net yet been con- tructed. the majority of people who are looking at renovating their kitchens have to work under much stricter paranieters. Exdst- ing physical layouts and budgets must be of primary doncern. A properly designed kitchen should take into account three main ac- tivity areas. There are food stor- age areas (including sink, steve, and mixing areas), and the food srving/clean-up areas. -By plan- Tips on caulking inside your bath The one area inside a house most commoily in need of caulking is around the bathtub or wash basin. Every timne the tub or basin is filled with water, it seules a littie. This causes a minor sepa- ration of the tubýor basin ftom the wall. Splashed water can then work between the tub or basin and the walI, starting the process of rot. For bathroomn projects, a small hand- * held tube of tub and tile caulking is usualy sufficient. To replace caulking, dlean out the old caulking with a screwdriver or putty * kaife, being careful nlot te scratch the tub, basin or surrounding wall tice. Cut the tip of the nozzle for a moderate-size bead (or remove the cap, if soequipped) and, when the area is completely dry, push the sealant around the edge in one coninuous fine. Once the caulk is in place, you can wet your tinger te smooth eut Uic caulk. it is very important that ail areas tobe caulked be free of any soap and grease deposits or diii. If net, the caulk won't properly adhere. When caulking a tub, it's a good idea to fili it with water so Uic caulk can penetrate the gap between Uic tub and wall.
