Basie Alternatives to Sheltered Employment, BASE, "provides a great degree of. community integration, necessary support in the commnunity," saysi support worker Laurie Molson. "We assist the individual to become part of the cominunity, to get work expeience that en- Help youî Heart Fund HeIp your Heart hancés social sills. With this 1program,'they're blossoniing, and it's marvellous," Molson said. ARC provides the training and support for the individual in the workplace. Support workers go into the business with the client te assist in integration, creating career goals and to outline the areas that need developing before the client takes the job. ARC approaches community businesses te take on the' employee, and Molson says the business benefits from the acquisition of an enthusiastic, cooperative worker. Individuals refer thernselves te the prograni, or are referred by another community program or by school boards. There have been 22 individuals placed in Oshawa and Ajax businesses, but only two are employed by a Whitby business. The accumulated leaves will be collected and taken to the regional composting site during the annual leat collection program. See below for collection information. The final compost material will be ready and available free of charge to-the residents of Whitby next year in the faîl.
