To the editor: Re: Elimination of school prayer from publie schools. Our infamous educators and the powers that be in the board of education are now deleting The. Lord's Prayer from opening morning exercises in the school because, supposedly, if offends atheists and ethnics. Will "O Canada" also be de- leted because this expression of allegiance to our Franco-Anglo and North American Indian heritage offends East Indians, Chinese, Jamaicans and Africans, along with atheists? When man is in peril of his life, who does he turn to? God. Well, "God help us," and "God helps those who help themselves." We, as an intelligent God-fearing and literate society, are allowing uneducated people to preside over and pre-empt our beliefs because they do not wish to participate in our tradition of Christianity and Judeo-Christian teachings. This is ludicrous. When ethnic factions emi- grated to Canada, the land of plenty, they apparently took an oath of allegiance to Canada - a civilized, Christianized country. If they were not prepared to meld into our way of life, why didn't they remain in their native land? When in Rome, do as the Romans. Why are we changing our educational programs to suit .ignorance, idolatry and irrever- ence? There must be a higher power, as was proven by Hurricane Gilbert. Man's only cry for help was to an Almighty Being, as it had been proven, we can't control the elements nor our destiny. There is a controlling influence over man and we, in Canada, refer to it as God. We are letting minorities dictate our school and educational policies. Will these factions also take over government, with no mention of God in openings of Parliament? What about our oaths in courts of law. Will swearing an oath on the bible no longer be considered a viable method of truth? The truth is that, in order to retain administrative and polit- ical clout, those in executive and reigning positions of government feel appeasement and the "nice guy" image will get votes, including the godless vote, and Canada's melting pot of cultures will boil over with its goody-goody image. Lectures on AIDS, drug abuse and sexual perversion have taken over our classroom time, and our church pulpits. If this time was devoted to The Ten Command- ments, the importance of truth Thanks for the participation To the editor: On Saturday, Sept. 17, more than 150 members of the Ontario Regiment, 1913 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps (Oshawa), 2525 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Coprs (Pickering), Royal Canadian Mounted Police and general public took part in the first annual "Lungs are for Life" Route March. Thanks to their efforts and support of the public, the event was a great success, raising in excess of $8,000. These funds will be used to help finance local Lung Association services and the edu- cational/scholarship programs of the Ontario Regiment and its af- filiated cadet corps. On behalf of the board of man- agement of the Lung Association - Durham Region, may I extend sincere thanks to all participants, and also to the numerous com- munity minded businesses which assisted with this, the first annu- al Charity Route March. Let's return to the basics, and educate our youth in the ways of righteousness. Let God's name remain hallowed. Barbara Black Oshawa. Drinking, more harmful than smoking To the editor: How long must viewers look at their TV screen and find it drenched 24 hours daily with misleading beer commercials? I wrote the Minister of Consumer Affairs in Ottawa and asked why the department had declared war on tobacco advertising while doing nothing about a product that is 100 per cent more destructive than smoking - beer drinking. You never see on a car a sticker saying "If you smoke, don't drive." Recent articles have revealed the horrible consequences of over-indulging in alcoholic beverages. Why then the permissive policy about the constant TV bombardment of glamorous commercials? Is It because it is tantamount to punching oneself in the noise? Sincerely G.H. Clement Millbroqk Speeders cause traffic jams Re: traffic in the left lane Daily commuters have become aware of traffic conditions on multi-lane highways. If there are three lanes, one is for traffic entering and leaving the highway at the many intersections, one is for tractor-trailers and other slower moving vehicles, cars and trailers, cars towing boats, the third lane is for through traffic travelling at the posted speed limit or above - unless a tractor trailer has to pass another, or a car enters the highway at a very slow speed. Then everything has to shift left. So speeders, you are the problem, you congest the traffic, you cannot be assured of one lane for yourself. There are older people who cannot drive as fast as you. They have a right to be in their cars, or you tell your mother or grandmother to keep off the highways. If you are walking on a sidewalk, you don't tailgate the person ahead of you or cut him off. The heavier the traffic flow, the slower it should be approached. Traffic, like water, cannot be forced down a pipe or a road. If too much arrives at a point too fast, it backs up. So speeders, drive slower and take your turn. Don't try to get ahead of that dear old lady. It might be your mother. Dugale Gorden Whitby i~k1 ...". .*:. .1.
