But Saturday'à Toy Run and Dance marked the third straight year 'ýfor the charity event, hosted by Oshawa's Harley-Davidson Group (HOG) chapterý. WhnBetty Cornelius first asked Dolores Peters if there was 'à toY run 'locally and discovered thalt there was none, the two decided to do something about it, although Peters had, only resided in Oshawa for a month, and Cornelius for only five days. 'We put- u posters* asking people to meet us at McDonald's if they, were interested in helping," says Cornelius. "About five people showed up." Despite the small turnout, the two 'women. were determnined to make it work, and the group ýmanaged to raise $800 and get 121 toys. Since then, the volunteers have increased to 50 from five. Peters Fire prevention week Oct. 9-15 Fire Prevention Week in both Canada and the United States began Oct. 9 and continues until Oct. 15. In Ontario alone, 154- people died lest year, as a resuit of fires. Many of these deaths could have been avoided if the victims had known more about fie preven- tion, and how to protect them- selves in the event of a fire. The Whitby department, with headquarters at 201 Brock St. S., is holding open house this week, noon ta about 8 p.m. each day. The open bouse includes a showing of videoe and movies on the subject as well as d1raws for prizes - either a fire extinguisher or a T-shirt. Also shown will be a robt, a new addition to the program. "The guys are really getting into it," she says. "Some of them will be dressing up as elves."' Except for the pictures that may be taken with Santa this Saturday at the Oshawa Centre (for $1.50), the run and dance will be the same as in previous years. Santa will also pass out toys to the eidren then the 14-mile ride will begin at 6 p.m. from the farmer's market at the Oshawa Centre. The dance will be held at the Legion Hall on Simcoe St. S., and will begin at 8:30 p.m. The price of admission is one new toy. Each year the group decides on a charity to which will be given the toys and money. This year's choice is the salvation Army. On Sunday, Oct. 9 there was a formal presentation made to Captain Bates of the amount of money and toys gathered. 'We have already raised $1,200," Cornelijus says. As to who will host the Toy Run and Dance next year, Cornelius says that she is not quite sure. "I don't know if it will be the HOG Chapter.
