Dianne Hoit, hearing impaired froni birth, recently received a hearing ear dog through the financial sponsorship of the Witby Lions Club. Heidi,- Holt's furry fiiend,' was trained by Hearing. Ear Dogs of Canada, a continuing project of the Lions' Foundation of Canada at a training centre in Ancaster. The foundation has placed 45 dogs with hearing impaired individuals over 15 across Canada. Dogs are rescued froni the Humane Society, and are by no means purebred, tramner Trish Taylor said. They are given training for months before going to a home, and are further trained in the home by a tramner to learn the layout of the house, and learn to respond to various sounds. Taylor said the trainine costs $4,000, with that amount usually carried by a service club. Hoit said that she heard about hearing ear dogs in the U.S. many years ago. When she heard of a Canadian hearing ear dog prograni, she "applied irne- diately" last spring. In July of 1987, Hoît met Heidi for the first time during the Lions' Club convention held in Whitby. She was told that she would have to wait six mnonths before a dog would be available. However, she was called before the new year and notified that Heidi would be coming to assist her this fail. "1 like to do things, and I can't hear things when I'm down- stairs," Hoît said. She has a sewing roorn at the end of the house, and had been restricted fron sewing for fear that she will not know when someone is at the door, or not hear her mother (conflned to bed with a stroke) when she needs assistance. Hoit spent mn'n just sitting .in *,the ýkfi "thinking about ail of thel I have to. do. Heidi- is being trained to recognize household sounds and to alert her owner to them. The rest of the Hoît household, husband Tony, daughters ýSusan and Mary and two cats arýe.assis-. ting in the training of the dog.. "The hardest part is not to turn' her into a family pet," Hoît said. The dog has taken a shine toe Holt's mother, and Hoît said that she will encourage this relation- ship as the dog appears to be therapeutic for her mother. It will be three months before Heidi is officially certified, with' many hours of training. However, aIl is not work for Heidi. She can take a bit of a- break when the family is home at night and on the weekend, and has regularly scheduled play tumes.' When Hoît goes out with Heidi, she will usually be accorded the sanie privileges as guide dogs for the visually impaired. Hearing ear dogs are identified by an orange lead and collar ta identify them on the street, and the owner carnies an identification card with the dog's picture on it. Legislation is being passed in the House of Commons and Senate that will offlcially grant these -rights ta hearing ear dogs. However, Hoît said that most merchants will allow the dog inside, and she will make a point of asking the merchant before bringing Heidi in. "l definitely recommend this prograrn ta anyone," said Hoit.
